Great Series on Netflix, “The Heavy Water Wars”

This is a great new series on Netflix with a full six episode arch. Great script, well-acted and very informative. I love the speech at the beginning of this short video and being the World War II buff that I am I am surprised I didn’t know anything about this sabotage operation. I am particular fascinated with the German researchers fight to build the Atom Bomb.

I couldn’t get over how he rationalized his research as pure science no matter what the ultimate result of his research would be. Watch his body language as he discusses the research and compare it to mathematician Alan Turing’s discussion of his code breaking research (performed by Benedict Cumberbatch) in The Imitation Game.  Knowing what we ultimately did with the atom bomb, makes you examine what makes one researcher the good guy and another the bad guy.

The Heavy Water War (original title Kampen om tungtvannet and alternative title The Saboteurs(UK)) is a six-episode TV miniseries produced by the Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation.[1] It is a Norwegian/Danish/British co-production, directed by Per-Olav Sørensen that tells the story about the German nuclear weapon project and the heavy water sabotage in Norway to disturb it during the Second World War, with a particular emphasis on the role of Leif Tronstad.[2][3]

When Breath Becomes Air

When Breath Becomes Air

I read the Paul Kalanithi’s book, When Breath Becomes Air. Anyone in Health Care who serves patients should read this book. The author experienced profound empathy for his patients as a neurosurgeon as he was fighting his Stage IV lung cancer.

The Truth Behind FDR's Secret Prisoner Exchange Program

I am reading The Train to Chrystal City about FDS’s Secret Prisoner Exchange Program and America’s only internment camp that had Japanese, German and Italian families. During World War II isolating immigrants in camps is a severe form of nonverbal punishment.

I have learned that:

So much of the general public’s prejudice back then mirrors current prejudice against immigrants.

Eleonore Roosevelt opposed the entire idea of internment camps and tried to stop them.  She met Congressmen and Senators and wrote articles under another name opposing the camps and asking for acceptance.

FDR was adamant that they were necessary and was far more racially prejudice than I knew. Also the secret motivations for the camps were to gain spies for us that spoke Japanese and German and get people to trade for POW.

We “kidnaped” Germans, Latin Americans, and Italians not only from the US but also from Mexico and South America to put in the camps. And that the rationalization for kidnapping people from other countries was that they may harbor the enemy near our borders, but what ended up happening is that those countries made money by “selling’ their immigrants.

Though I knew it happened, far more people than I thought were reported as “spies” by their neighbors and coworkers in order for the neighbors to gain property and for the coworkers to get the jobs of those they reported or advancement.

The favorite song for the interred was, “Don’t fence me in.”
