Does the Voice Show Emotion Accurately?

Your Voice and Emotion

I love this topic. I am known as a body language expert, but my degrees are broader and include all of the nonverbal communication. The skill I use most often in my "reads" of people is detecting emotion and honesty via paralanguage. When I follow murder trials for the media or analyze public figures' speeches or events like apology statements, I place the paralanguage read as an essential part of the analysis.

1.   How much emotion does our voice reveal? Please note any critical studies on this subject matter that contribute to your answer. If it doesn't convey emotion, please explain why.

Are voices reveal all our emotions. The seven core emotions (there are more, but the basics are ) Anger, Fear, Disgust, Happiness, Sadness, Surprise, and Contempt, and more.  Research shows that people more accurately interpret someone's emotion from just their voice than they were from listening to and observing or just observing them.

(Here is one of the studies https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2017/10/171010105639.htm)

Human voices convey emotions much more quickly than words. It takes just 1/10 of a second for our brains to begin to recognize emotions from paralanguage (Paralanguage in the science of all the nuances of the voice including breath, tone, tempo, volume level, pauses, etc.) And we pay more attention to the emotions of vocalizations, like laughter or grows, or crying than we do emotions expressed via words. https://www.sciencedaily.com/releases/2016/01/160118134938.htm   A test for that is to cry or giggle to a baby or a dog and see how they respond. Or note how, when someone you love calls you, sometimes you know that something is wrong in their lives just from the way they greet you on the call.

2.   Can you provide 3-4 examples (if there are any) about times when voice conveys emotion?

Voice is one of the primary pathways for expressing emotions. You can see how you can say the same word to portray many different emotions just by how you express it vocally. Say the word "Really" with interest, excitement, concern, worry, sympathy, and annoyance.

Now say, "Congratulations" filled with joy for someone. Now say it sarcastically,

Now imagine you are consoling someone for a loss and say, "I am so sorry for your loss." Without any emotion and now say it with emotion.

When I analyze influential people's apology statements to the media, I listen to them, and I am sorry statement to hear how they say it. (If they do) and it tells me so much about whether they feel remorse. )

A fun example is how Joey on Friends says, "How are you doing?" By vocally emphasizing the YOU that makes the listener feel that he is speaking directly to them in a suggestive sexual way. ( And yes he has a facial expression that goes with it)

3.   My thought on this is that I wonder how a wearable can detect the more subtle changes in your voice. When you're sad or nervous, your voice may shake—but on a day-to-day basis, how might something like this be useful for people?  4 What is more subtle ways emotion show up in speech?

4.   I think it could help people who struggle with depression and other issues self monitor their emotional state so they can give themselves more self-care.

At this moment,  Under COVID 19  many people are dealing with more stress and anxiety, and depression than under normal circumstances.

This device could help monitor e how they feel before their emotions become more debilitating.  For someone with more severe issues, the device could be life-changing. For example, someone with bipolar disorder could detect if they are going into a depressive or manic state and self soothes by breathing meditating or stepping away from an overstimulating event or stopping dangerous behavior like drinking or gambling, call a friend, or their therapist.

It might help someone that has issues with a temper and dangerous anger issues self-monitor as some people don't hear their voices change. I.e., "I AM NOT YELLING."

It could help someone that is more C corrector on the DISC assessment of behavior differences that are typically not very emotional in their delivery to create more emotional nuisances in their essential communications.

The technology has existed for years in the form of VSA, Voice Stress Analysis to detect deception. Conceivably if you could use the wearable to monitor the stress in your voice to reduce it to be a better liar, this could be dangerous for others, primarily if used by someone on the Dark Triad like a Malignant Narcissists. They already use their skills at reading people to manipulate their delivery to "appear" other than are to feed their need for emotional supply.

5.   Anything else you'd like to add?

You may know this, but I love it. We know that your voice sounds different when you are smiling, a genuine zygomatic smile than when you are "fake" smiling. Your vocal cords and larynx change when you smile.  Research shows that listeners can identify the type of smile someone is displaying based on the sound of their voice alone. (Smile -- And The World Can Hear You, Even If You Hide

How a Cough or Clearing of the Throat May Indicate Deception

Someone can cough or clear their throat because they have a cold or allergy. But sometimes a scratchy throat is due to psychological irritation. Nerve endings, including those in the throat, can fire when we are stressed. Our central nervous system is alerted that something is not right.

Liars can cough or clear their throat subconsciously when they lie, and sometimes we subconsciously, cough or clear our throats when we hear someone else lie.The symbolism is powerful. We hear someone lie or we know about a lie or secret and the topic of the lie is being discussed and we want to say the truth but, it catches in our throat. Our central nervous is responding to the dissonance. We have the truth inside but, it is blocked from coming out.

In order to distinguish whether someone's cough, throat cleanse is a response to a speaker’s lie note the timing, in this case, Mulvaney was not coughing and suddenly started coughing when Trump was asked about his tax returns. Again, Mulvaney might have had a throat irritation but, typically that would be indicated by him coughing throughout the interview, in this case, it was an isolated cough time with a question about Trump's tax returns.

“Trump had been asked a question about his tax returns when someone off camera – identified as Mulvaney – reportedly begins coughing.”

When Men Abuse and Get Away With It, Ryan Adams Abuse and Malignant Narcissism .

“There were times when I chose to believe his (Ryan Adams) insane version of the truth because it was easier than believing that anyone is capable of being this much of a monster.”

“By what they did and didn’t do... None of (his Adams friends) held him accountable....they validated his behavior... he couldn’t have done this without them.”
It's important that we read the story in the link. We need to stop this kind of lingering horrific abuse in our culture. No one should get away with being a monster just because they are rich and or famous.
It’s hard to say how much this story triggers memories of my monster abuser. Some of our friends at the time chose to believe his wild stories, his horrible character assassination. The man who had abused me, betrayed me, was stalking me, attacking my character and who had threatened my life. I was so afraid, so afraid, with valid reasons to be including an FBI profiler’s opinion of him, the warning he gave me about my ex. An expert who said, that he was sorry I was touched by evil, an expert who said I was lucky to be alive.
Our group didn’t care. Some were fooled in the same way I had been and it was easier for them, to pretend nothing happened. Oddly, they called me stupid for being fooled by him as they continued to believe his horrid lies.  They thought, “How could that dorky guy be a monster? And he was rich and treated them to expensive drinks, dinners trips so they did nothing. Some of them did something equally as odd. They said behind his back that my abuser was crazy, they said he was obviously a sociopath as they continued to drink his wine! He continued his lying, cheating and destroying of more people and they continued drinking his wine. They didn't want to miss the parties.
Their betrayal on top of the abuse changed the way I thought about the world. So I built a better world.
I also wrote a song about Ryan Adams!

Judge Brett Kavanaugh Hearing about Allegations, Body Language . Is is lying?

We still don’t know if he is guilty of any of these charges. These people don't know how to correctly question and this is not the correct forum for discovering the truth. We also don't know because of the way he chose to speak and respond to questions, He needs a real interrogation by someone trained. Heres what we do know he did. I want to make it clear. I don't know if he is guilty. I analyzed his testimony in previous testimony, in the FOX interview and today for multiple national media outlets Here is what we do know.
1. He chose over and over to evade questions
2. Over and over in previous testimony, in the Fox interview and today, he used the “I don’t know defense” Even though several times I have seen proof that several times in his testimony and interviews that he did know the answer to the questions he responded under oath to not knowing. That shows he uses "I don't know" to cover the truth.
3. His showed strong uncontrolled emotions. In fact, he used strong emotions that are known in deception detection as “cover emotions” Anger, Victim tears and Laughter. We don’t know if they are real, but I know he used the top three. It could be because he is innocent.
This belligerent personality and range of emotions are particularly unsettling. He seems to be a totally different person. It's a massive change.
I pointed out in my read of the FOX interview that his flat, robotic, repetitive emotionless interview seemed odd and odder to me even more considering the letter he wrote to the senate judiciary committee the day of the FOX interview. where he was angry. Specifically, he said in his letter to the SJC that he thought the reason this was happening was a witch hunt and a few hours later in the Fox interview when asked why this was happening he said, "I don't know?"
4. Other unregulated emotions - He also was often belligerent boastful and contemptuous. He seems to be a totally different person. It's a massive change.
5. He redefines terms, and or he uses totally different words or terms in his responses than the words or terms used in the question when asked about something.
He said several times, in the FOX interview and today, that he never Sexually Assaulted anyone, even when that is not what he was asked. That is a term that could mean different things and he was not asked to define it. There are dozens of examples such as saying "I feel asleep." when he was asked if he ever passed out after drinking.
One unsettling example of redefining terms is in his opening statement, in fact, every time Brett Kavanaugh said "all four witnesses say this never happened," he was lying. They, in fact, said they did not recall. So he redefined what those words mean. They said “I don’t recall” and he says that means it never happened. In fact, one of those four said she believes Ford!!! Other examples are giving his new definitions to the terms "Bogg" "Devils Triangle" and redefining the terms used around his yearbook entries about Renault. There is also something I found interesting. He said at one point he didn't do anything of a "sexual nature" to Dr. Ford. Was he redefining some action he took as "non-sexual" and was he saying he didn't do anything to the adult Dr. Ford because when she was the 15 year old she had a different last name? One of the reasons I think this is relevant is that he is known for judging by the "letter" of the law. The other reason is that I have seen this technique used so often by liars.
6. Today and in the FOX interview In his answers about the accusations of behavior in his youth he bridges immediately in his response with what a good person he has been since then. That is irrelevant in response to a question about possible past behavior. Innocent people tend to keep denying the actual accusation. They stay in the event until they know you believe they didn't do the accused action. Liars tend to immediately divert to other times and other behavior. It doesn't' mean he is guilty it's just odd.
7. He also uses what is called a fog of confusion, humor, and the “everybody does it response” as in “We all like beer” response.
8. Severa; times he evades by answering a question with a question. For example when asked, "Do you drink beer?" he responds, "Do you drink beer?" instead of answering. And when asked the question asked, “Have you ever blacked out?” with belligerent and attacking nonverbal cues as he asks, "Have you?”
I was very briefly a substance abuse counselor and I had to question people every week on their drinking and their behavior. I would have asked him more specific questions like, How many beers did you typically drink at a party? What is the most you ever had to drink in one evening? You went to get parties did you ever drink more than other people at the party?. Did you ever fall down when drinking? and I certainly would have gone deeper on his reply when asked about if he ever blacked out that he "Fell Asleep" with a clarification of the term blacked out. The drinking questions are critical to the assault allegations and it was interesting that that line of questioning was interrupted.
Another example of possible problems with the definition of words and or terms.
First Clip
"I swear today under oath before the Senate and the nation, before my family and God, I am innocent of this charge"
First, let me say, I have analyzed him in previous testimony before Congress, during his FOX interview and today. He has a habit of rephrasing and redefining terms and of not answering direct questions. Here is says, “innocent of this charge. He has accused of multiple behaviors an actions against her and charges from other women, not ONE.”
This is a technique liars use to answer honestly but not answer the question as asked. In this case, he can think of one of the many charges against him that he doesn’t feel he is guilty to swear to before God.
He does it again saying, “I am innocent of THIS charge.” Rather than of all these charges. I also that he state this denial calmly as anger can be used as a cover emotion.
His tears seem real and they can certainly call forth empathy.
His tears can show that he is absolutely innocent, but I have seen in my work throughout the years, people that are “caught” cry because they feel like victims of circumstances. I don’t know if he’s a malignant narcissist but malignant narcissist are known for claiming victimhood and eliciting sympathy. I have an additional problem with somebody crying during their congressional testimony. I seen people eviscerated during congressional testimony. He was not questioned with the same intensity as many have been. I’ve seen many other people questioned and he’s the first person I’ve ever seen cry.
Tears, laughter and anger are what we call in deception detection the
“Cover Emotions” the emotions that cover up their untruths.
His extreme emotions and inability to control his anger, rage, contempt, and tears is revealing. Again I lust say, I have analyzed dozens of congressional hearings and I have never seen this broad range of emotions or this intensity. He could be innocent.
Some may feel are justified some may say they are not appropriate to use before Congress when you are being vetted for your ability to be calm an impartial as a supreme court judge.
There is a key piece of Ford’s testimony that is revelatory. She says she remembers the laughter. ( As does the second accuser) If Kavanagh did it, and he was laughing he may not have seen it or felt it as anything put “Horseplay.” He may not have had it register in his memory as anything wrong or bad. And or if he was drunk he may not have remembered at all. This is important because his anger is so strong and he seems so emphatic and he could actually feel he never did anything like this, that he never did anything wrong, and or he could possibly because it was not memorable for him because it was to him just fun/funny for/to him, or because he was drunk to not remember it all.

Patti Wood It’s interesting that I’ve had conversations with men who say they are searching through their memory for times when they may have pushed through a woman’s nose in response to request for sex. Just is there are thousands of victims of sexual abuse who are being triggered to recall the pain there are thousands of men who are being triggered to examine their own behavior .

The O.J. Simpson Interview on Fox Was O.J. Lying Or Telling The Truth? What does O.J. Simpson's Body Language Reveal?

Patti Wood
·
If you didn’t see the interview and you’re wondering did he do it? Yes. I speak on credibility and deception detection.

There is a clear record that he abused her. The police came to the house several times. Most people forget that detail. She was afraid enough to call the police.

In the interview he uses a classic abuser technique and gives his abuse a softer term.
Did he kill her? Yes. While describing the murder he smiles with duper’s delight and laughs. Malignant narsissits derive pleasure from inflicting pain, it gives them a sense of control.
If you watch the interview you my feel horribly uncomfortable. That’s your central nervous system alerting you that something is wrong. When someone says one thing with their words and their nonverbal behavior says something completely different your central nervous system alerts you to possible danger.
In the interview, he blames his wife several times for his bad behavior using the classic victim blaming tactic of a malignant narcissist.
In one of the most horrific parts of the interview, Simpson is “remembering” the blood at the murder scene, and for the first time in the interview as he does that, his nonverbal behavior and his words match. He is uncomfortable. Horrifying.
It took the Metoo movement to increase our awareness of abuse and make the Fox network air this interview.
So what can you do? Listen carefully to your friends and family. Look for signs that someone in your life may be suffering under the Shadow of abuse. Believe someone who tells you they are afraid. Don’t discount their fear. And if you are in a healthy, loving relationship hug your partner right now.
