A Body Language Expert Analyzes Meghan and Harry's Royal Baby Photo-Call

Patti Wood, body language expert and author of Snap: Making the Most of First Impressions, Body Language, and Charisma, tells MarieClaire.com that despite Meghan holding herself together beautifully, you could tell there was a bit of physical discomfort going on.
The Duke & Duchess Of Sussex Pose With Their Newborn Son

“If you look at Meghan's feet, her toes are together and there's arcing around the feet. The reason that's striking is because that's always the most honest emotion. That’s not how she usually stands, but it makes perfect sense because she just had a baby a few days ago," Wood explains. "The rest of her is so happy and so composed you’d have difficulty knowing she just went through this big event. It's just the sweet little tell in the feet of this otherwise beautifully-composed and happy woman. It looks like a spring day and it’s her wedding—she's glowing—but she just had a baby and she’s not super comfortable."

Melania Trump In Disconnect Mode, Notes Expert Tapped By ‘Hollywood Life’

Here is one of the stories that publications do where they take my quotes from other publications and create a new article without my knowledge. This is a sister publication of the publication I did the original interview with.

Melania Trump In Disconnect Mode,
Notes Expert Tapped By ‘Hollywood Life’

It’s another day, and another body language expert has come up to the plate to take a swing at analyzing Melania Trump through recent pictures that emerged online. The latest scoop on the Donald and Melania Trump connection is that there is none, according to Patti Wood. Hollywood Life conveys that Wood is a body language expert and author of the book Snap: Making the Most of First Impressions, Body Language & Charisma.

Hollywood Life tapped into Wood’s expertise for a recent article about the relationship of Donald and Melania Trump, “who don’t seem like a couple” in the new pictures that emerged online this week. This isn’t the first body language expert to make the headlines with a Melania Trump analyzation. The first lady’s behavior at the State of the Union address was also under the microscope of another body language expert, according to HuffPost.

At the State of the Union Adress, Melania was described as “watching from the gallery.” The first lady’s “facial expressions vacillated from smiles to strained looks,” writes HuffPost. Joe Navarro, a body language expert and author of What Every Body Is Saying: An Ex-FBI Agent’s Guide to Speed-Reading People, reported his opinion on Melania’s actions while at the State of the Union Address.

Navarro said, “It was not that she looked stoic, though she often did, it was almost a distant pained look. She almost mechanically stood and applauded, without any form of alacrity. That may speak to some psychological discomfort and emotional pain.”
The latest pictures to tell a story for a body language expert are the photos that were circulated online of Melania and Donald visiting the victims of the school shooting in Florida. The couple was captured on camera as they made their way through the hospital corridors, and it was during this time when another body language expert offered up her impressions of what you were seeing or not seeing to be more precise.

Wood points to the couple appearing very “distant from one another” and painting a picture of Melania’s presence as “tense” with her feet “so close together they were almost touching.” This was most likely due to tension, suggests Wood. Her arms and legs remained very close to her body, and Wood said this is a position people find themselves in when they are afraid.
Melania stance “shows fear,” claims this expert, who went on to say that with “no life” in her arms or legs, she looked as if she was in a totally “rigid” stance. She was seen in this position in the pictures while standing nearby her husband. One of those photos is shown above. Wood conveys an “enormous amount of tension” is seen coming from Melania with her feet so close together and her arms stiff at her side.
The body language expert also pointed to Trump and Melania being in a place that was somber and sad, as they were visiting the victims of a horrendous shooting and this would play on anyone’s emotions. You would expect this husband-and-wife team to console each other through this visit, but there didn’t appear to be any of this going on said Wood from the pictures she analyzed.
Woods notes that Melania stands with her arms stiff at her sides and is not offering any comfort to Trump. He is not offering any to her as well, leaving Wood to say “there’s no connection between them.”
These pictures come on the heels of the reports of Donald Trump’s alleged affairs with a porn star and a Playgirl. Hollywood Life suggests that Melania seems to avoid any type of affection in public with her husband since the first allegations hit the headlines followed by Trump’s lawyer’s admission of paying off an adult film star. These affair allegations have been denied by President Trump.

Body Language Experts Reveal the Sneaky Signs Your Partner Might Be Lying

In the article they say the body itches but I didn't say that. I said that there's more nerve endings around the tip of the nose, the outer edge of the ear, around the orbit of the eye and around mouth and when you're stressed those nerve endings fire causing them to itch. I just talked about those locations. They should re-post the article with the corrections soon.

His words may say one thing, but his lips say entirely another!
By some estimates, the average person tells at least one little white lie per day. A small fib here or there likely doesn't do much damage, but when it's someone you love and trust that's struggling to stick to the truth, it's a bit more worrying.

When attempting to interpret someone's behavior, especially a romantic partner, it's important to first determine their normal habits."When you see a change in their baseline behavior, that's your 'aha moment,'" says Blanca Cobb, body language expert and author of Method of the Masters.
It's also important to note that unusual body language doesn't necessarily mean deception. Work stress, anxiety, or nervous jitters — which often result in fidgeting, breaking eye contact, and filler words (like "um" and "you know") — could be influencing your loved one's behavior.
Truthful people gesture just before they speak, whereas liars gesture just after."
So what's normal fidgeting, and what counts as deceptive body language? Timing is everything: "Truthful people gesture just before they speak, whereas liars gesture just after they start talking," explains Traci Brown in her book How to Detect Lies, Fraud and Identity Theft.
Here are a few ways to interpret potentially deceptive facial expressions, hand, and foot gestures:

Facial Expressions: Twitchy Eyes and Lip Movements
"When under stress, you'll show snippets of your true emotions on your face," says Cobb. "These micro-expressions occur within 1/15th of a second."
Shifty eyes and reduced eye contact are not indicators of shady behavior. What is: twitching of the eyes and mouth, pursed lips, and excessive blinking (we're talking more than 70 blinks a minute), Cobb explains.
A disingenuous smile is another indicator of a lie, according to Brown. "Duper's Delight," for example, happens when someone smiles at an inappropriate moment, like when they have just been caught in a lie.

Hand Gestures: Too Much Touching
In uncomfortable situations, adults try to comfort themselves (somebody has to, right?). To do so, they'll touch their mouth, eyes, ears, and nose to alleviate their sense of stress or worry. "This changes the body chemistry and acts a prescription to help calm the body down," says Patti Wood, body language expert and author of SNAP Making the Most of First Impressions Body Language and Charisma.
Every person has different gestures that provide comfort — just like every child reaches for a different blanket or teddy bear at night. The most common comfort cues in adults are knuckle cracking, increased yawning, crossing legs, tapping fingers, humming, rocking, wiggling, and hair touching, according to Brown.
You might even notice that a suspected liar begins to scratch himself. "Stress negatively affects nerve endings, which causes people to feel itchy," says Wood. The eyes, nose, ears, and mouth have the most nerve endings, so they are often the first areas for which someone may reach.
When wrapped up in a lie or abnormally stressful situation, they may hide their hands under a table or desk, or tuck their hands into their pockets."When the conversation moves to tough questions where you need direct answers and their hands suddenly move below the table, it's likely they're hiding something and aren't 100% forthcoming," says Brown.

Fidgety Feet: Twisting, Tapping, and More
Last but not least, fidgety feet are a major indicator of guilt. "We have the least control over our feet," Brown says. "When people are answering tough questions and are on the spot, they'll look like they're rocking." By twisting, tapping, or bouncing legs, adults will create a lack of symmetry in their body.
"While doing this, they are saying one thing but feeling another," says Wood. This off-center behavior mimics the distance between the truth and the lie.

Space Invasion, When People Get too Close

I’m about to speak to a group of CEOs in Florida.  I notice that two of the group members are standing side-to-side, feet in a guy relaxed stance talking together laughing and eating bagels. Another CEO, the only guy in the meeting wearing a tie approaches them.  Their entire bodies change and turn to face the Tie guy each enlarging their bodies and moving their feet far apart.  In a brief minute they are exchanging thousands of cues.  It is clear to me these guys aren’t going to share the bagels or anything else with Tie guy but Tie guy doesn’t pick up on the cues.  Research shows that in just one minute you can exchange up to 10,000 nonverbal cues.

This example specifically was Proxemics- how people use and perceive space.  Adults typically have more control of their face and upper bodies but the feet are under less conscious control.

The broader your stance typically the more powerful you feel or want to feel. There’s physics to it!  The more space you take up the less of a push over you are as well as the message of power you send to others.

So note, our feet communicate exactly what we think and feel more honestly than other parts of our bodies. (Morris, 1985, 244) Generally, people are focused on controlling their facial expressions, torsos and upper body while communicating.  The feet are vital to us responding to danger and stress and we need them to freeze, flee, fight, or fall.

When you’re monitoring yourself check out your feet how you feel about yourself the topic or situation and the other person or people you are with.

The CEOs eating bagels in the story changed their stances from relaxed to what I call a Toe Stop position. A position people, mainly men, take when they are standing side-by-side with their buddies in agreement, talking to equals and relaxed. When Tie guy approached they went into what I call lock and load position. True Grit ready to go for their guns. It is an alpha/ready to attack or defend stance.

Is he comfortable and confident? Body Language cues of Robert Pattinson (The actor who played in Twilight) at a recent press conference

Below are my notes for Hollywoodlife interview after reading recent photos of Robert Pattinson.  Check out the links below to see the photos I read and then my insights.

http://www.hollywoodlife.com/2012/06/04/robert-pattinson-body-language-sexy-pics/

In a recent interview Robert Pattinson (The actor who played in Twilight) said he felt so scared about taking on roles other than Twilight. Looking at recent photographs during a press event  for his new movie Cosmopolis.

Does he look comfortable?  He does look fairly comfortable though he is showing a slight lack of confidence by the lack of space he takes up and the asymmetry of his gesture clusters in many of the photos. Under confident men place their feet apart more of six to eight inch range. Look at all the men’s feet in the first group.. See how he has his heels closer together than the other three men. Also look at that first photo and see how he has his arms close to his body and his hand in his pocket and in addition has his body at a slight tilt.

That shows a little protectiveness. We show ourselves straight on when we are super confident.  When we aren’t super self assured we may stand or tilt and present asymmetrically.

The most interesting thing I think is how he is interacting with the guys. He is feeling a difference in his power and relationships.

Remember how he was often interviewed and photographed as part of a couple or love triangle in the twilight press conferences. I read hundreds of those press conference photos. In this press conference he is often shot looking at the men and lowering his head and shoulders as he listens. I think here its not necessarily a lack of comfort of self-confidence, but respect, the  recogogntion he is not the alpha male of the group.  He's interacting with experienced, powerful men he is feeling the difference of interacting with young co stars and an adoring young female audience and that is making him nervous.

The photos were he is laughing show a great ease and delight. There is one particular photo where he is laughing leaning forward with a full open mouth and teeth showing  that indicate a true playful laugh that you actually don’t see very often at press conferences. (Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts are rare exceptions they both have that wonderful laugh)  What is interesting to me is how he is dealing with other people.

He does put his hand over his mouth in a few of photos in way that suggests he is unsure or lacks confidence, but the laughing photos show me that was just a little blip in his other wis not sure he is speaking.

The toothpick is a nice prop. Men use this little sharp weapon like a artifact to say, remember I am the cool guy.  Note he didn’t just finish eating corn on the cob he is at a press conference. So we know he is choosing that prop to enhance his image. Toothpicks also serve as a comforting prop. There are so many nerve ending in and around the mouth and chewing the toothpick stimulates the nerves and creates a soothing chemical response.

Body Language - 23 Must Know Moves by Patti Wood

What does a frown signify? That's not so hard to figure out. Ditto for hands on hips or crossed arms. But not every example of body language is so easy to interpret, and that's where Patti Wood comes in. Patti teaches people the subtleties of body language - and was just in the news for teaching employees of a New York City hotel how to figure out guests' needs simply by looking at them. Check the link below to view her recent project with CBS News.

What Your Street Style Pose Says About You

I was featured in "Refinery 29" today, which is a global fashion news magazine. I gave body language reads and descriptions of several different poses of people attending Fashion Week in New York. What's your street pose? What does it say about you?

To Cool to Stand, or Lean on Me
This stance shows a desire to look “Cool, relaxed and chill.”
The crossed feet are a unique cue, typically crossing means shyness or closure, but crossing the feet in a relaxed stance says “I am so comfortable that I don’t have to have my feet in position to flee or fight.” “I am not scared or threatened” The lean to the side also shows an ease and comfort. Only the subtle cues, sunglasses, one hand in the pocket and the other hand slightly covering the belly show her need to keep her privacy.

The walk away or Run Away, or “caught on tape” pose
“I don’t look good enough for a photo”
The feet move first under pressure and this stance, with the toes pointing away from the camera, the bowed head, and the slouched shoulders protecting the heart. The purse covering her stomach show I don’t think I look good enough, I am embarrassed.

The sassy model or look at me, or happy hoofer, Cheerleader leap
This pose shows you are super confident, joyful and love to be in the limelight.
I call this “up” body language. Upward body cues, up in the air foot, raised arms, upward facing palms, chest up and out, chin and head up are cues or happiness, joy and excitement. She loves herself from her head to her shoes!!! She knows she looks hot.

Red carpet, or the slimmer, or spanx my body, Am I ready for the red carpet?
The hand on the hip is a model technique. It lifts the chest up and up and elongates the upper torso making you look slimmer but because of the elbow out also making the viewer excited. (The elbow out creates a danger silhouette alerting the primitive brain sending it the message I am dangerous. The foot cross in this pose one foot protecting the other in a foot hug, show she knows how to pose the upper half of her body but behind the pose she is really not as confident.
She is not quite ready for the red carpet.

The prim and proper, “I know I am good, but you can’t have me.”
She knows how to take care of herself. She is confident but she doesn’t give it away for free.
The head tilted to the side shows her coyness, It says, “Aren’t I cute.” This is a woman who on one hand says, “come and get me and on the other says, but it won’t be easy.”
Notice how this poser is facing straight on to the photographer, the only poser to do so. She is protecting herself by crossing her feet and using her bag to shield her stomach or say shield herself, but the overall pose says I like myself. She is confident in every clothing and accessory choice. See how the belt is given attention and the bag is held at just the right placement to show it off, not to high and not sagging to low or too far in front to protect her pelvis.

How to Master Deception Detection.....Begin By Being Observant.

Here is a request from a future participant in an upcoming deception detection presentation. "I would enjoy any background information that you might be willing to share at this point. I am very interested in the topic and want to make sure that this session is as effective and productive as possible for myself.

How wonderful to hear from you before the program. To prepare for the program and to begin to understand and read peoples body language on a deeper level and become a body language master,  may I suggest you begin by paying extra attention to how people respond to simple everyday little questions such as, "How are you?" "How is your day going?" Watch and listen for peoples' very first response, even before they actually get the words out. What are their facial expressions? Do they move toward or away from you? Then, as they begin speaking notice what their face and body does as they answer your questions. Watch what they do in the silence as they finish responding. And here is a strange suggestion, notice peoples' feet. Specifically, notice the way peoples' feet point when they are engaged in a conversation with you and where your feet point.

I just got an email from a body language/first impression coaching client. Goodness, how wonderful it is to have the opportunity to see a coaching client's' hard work make them feel more confident.

Hi, Patti
What an incredible coaching session it was! You are truly absolutely amazing! You are the best coach ever! I could feel the boost in my confidence level immediately after your wonderful instruction and I have already gained much more confidence and felt more comfortable in all kinds of social events already. It is really fantastic to have you as a body language/first impression coach. You have truly enlightened me. I really appreciate it. I hope you have a wonderful evening and I really look forward to our next coaching session.
Sincerely,
Ning

Body Language Signals that Make You Look Approachable.

Pay attention to your walk. If you take a close look at the way you walk in shoes, you may find that some of your shoes make you walk duck-footed with your toes going outward. Toss the shoes. If you are a woman and are gasping with disbelief at such sacrilegious recommendations keep reading. I don't care if they are really cute and you got them on sale at DSW, get rid of them. Ditto for shoes that make clip clop sounds as you walk. That means most clogs and heavy flip flop shoes. Remember ducks make cute carton figures but not attractive approachable women or men.
