Body Language Tips Learned At Presentation

Many participants from my 20 minute after lunch presentation yesterday to the Atlanta Women's Network have been emailing me telling me what they have noticed since the program.
Here are some of the learning points people have gotten from the presentation.
Pay attention to your gut impressions and take action on what your read tells you. Handshakes create rapport. Put out your hand at a slight angle and shake hands making palm to palm contact. Seat people in a way to create the result your want and remember that men feel comfortable and at ease speaking positioned side by side. Notice peoples' feet. Use your smile to show your happy and your words to say when your not.

Here is a sample of the feedback.
I wanted to write to tell you how much I enjoyed your talk yesterday. The topic is always interesting, and you brought out some points that I never realized previously. Wow was I lucky to be seated at your table! Thank you for your tip of placing, "tongue-to-roof-of-mouth," for the occasions where I wish to utter, right ... right ... right... ;-) This tip could be a job saver...!

How to Master Deception Detection.....Begin By Being Observant.

Here is a request from a future participant in an upcoming deception detection presentation. "I would enjoy any background information that you might be willing to share at this point. I am very interested in the topic and want to make sure that this session is as effective and productive as possible for myself.

How wonderful to hear from you before the program. To prepare for the program and to begin to understand and read peoples body language on a deeper level and become a body language master,  may I suggest you begin by paying extra attention to how people respond to simple everyday little questions such as, "How are you?" "How is your day going?" Watch and listen for peoples' very first response, even before they actually get the words out. What are their facial expressions? Do they move toward or away from you? Then, as they begin speaking notice what their face and body does as they answer your questions. Watch what they do in the silence as they finish responding. And here is a strange suggestion, notice peoples' feet. Specifically, notice the way peoples' feet point when they are engaged in a conversation with you and where your feet point.

I just got an email from a body language/first impression coaching client. Goodness, how wonderful it is to have the opportunity to see a coaching client's' hard work make them feel more confident.

Hi, Patti
What an incredible coaching session it was! You are truly absolutely amazing! You are the best coach ever! I could feel the boost in my confidence level immediately after your wonderful instruction and I have already gained much more confidence and felt more comfortable in all kinds of social events already. It is really fantastic to have you as a body language/first impression coach. You have truly enlightened me. I really appreciate it. I hope you have a wonderful evening and I really look forward to our next coaching session.
Sincerely,
Ning

What Body Language & Vocal Cues Do You Notice In These Real Interrogations For A Murder Investigation?

As Part of the "Homework" assignment for my Deception Detection class I am sending participants to view the video at the link below of the interrogations of acquitted suspects in a murder investigation.
Here is the story as emailed to me by a group that is investigating the murder.
Patti – I’ve been seeing and reading about you for some time. I’ve been writing on an unsolved DC murder from 2006. No one has been charged with the crime, but three men were just acquitted on charges of cover up and obstruction in a closely-watched trial. We have finally obtained and began posting the police interrogations of the three men from the night of the crime. http://wp.me/pVtne-3SY

In your line of work, is body language reliable in such high pressure and unnatural environments like a police interrogation room? My answer is that stress actually increases the amount of cues given by a suspect. For background and informational purposes, based on your experience, can anything useful be gleaned from such a late night and confrontational interview? Confrontation is not always the best way of conducting an interview. In my workshops I discuss different questioning techniques and their benefits.
There are those who still believe the three defendants are involved in the murder of their friend. Thank you.

PS: For information on our site and citizen investigative efforts over the last 20 months, this recent Washington Post story is a good start:

What Does Pointing Your Finger at Someone Mean? Can Someone Point Their Finger and Lie?

I did a FOX News TV interview with Neil Cavuto concerning finger pointing and lie detection. Here is the transcipt of the TV interview. The actual video is on my website http://www.pattiwood.net/ and is also up on my YouTube channel. http://youtube.com/user/bodylanguageexpert
QUESTION -What does finger pointing mean –
It’s a really potent gesture of power, a symbolic weapon. When you make a fist and thrust your finger you’re symbolically shooting someone.

If I say, "take this and put it over there," it means something different than take this and put it over there or take this and put it over there. Threes an implied threat. I’ll kill you if you don’t move that.

QUESTION-When you see someone pointing their finger does it mean they are lying. Absolutely not, the average Joe would never do that. In fact, when I teach law enforcement I say it can be a sign someone’s telling the truth because they are passionately defending themselves. (It is very hard for the average person to lie and point their finger in sync with what they are saying.)

But certain ego types do use it. I see it used by powerful men who are use to getting their way and lied successfully in the past. They use it when they are cornered to defend themselves by counter attack. A different version is used by speakers to show conviction of thought. It’s typically not women as there is a sexual component as well.

QUESTION What about Rafael Palmeiro in front of congress in March 2005
Detecting deception in a scripted speech is tricky because you loose the critical spontaneity, but I think he is lying because his timing is off. When you are telling the truth you feel that in your heart, you show it with your gesture then you say it. Feel - Show - Say. He said,"I never," as he slowly raised his finger making it look staged.

Bill Clinton showed four clear deception cues:
1. "I never had" rather than the more natural contraction I didn’t. Liars like to emphasize the not or never
2. His finger is crooked rather than straight showing a lack of his own conviction
3. He is pointing one way and looking another a lack of congruence in his thoughts and actions
4. Depersonalization saying "she" then self correcting to say Monica's name.

George Bush
He uses the political coached version of the gesture to emphasize his conviction. Notice the point is up to heaven rather than out and the cadence with the words.

Nixon
His point goes down and his volume fades out also showing he is lying and lacks conviction in his words.
He doesn’t use it on the, “I’m not a crook” statement he uses it to say "he never made money in office."

Gary Condit
Scary body language! I counted over 40 deception cues in his famous Connie Chung interview. He shows his anger by not only shooting Connie Chung but slicing her in a sword gesture and symbolically strangling her.

Allí comencé a sonreír.

Face to Face Conversations,The Benefit of Meaningful Conversations.

Last night our "Meeting of the Minds" discussion group talked about quite a few interesting topics. Among them the blog on the leak of the BP oil pipe and the candidates for the next Georgia election. Well, actually the lack of quality candidates. We always bring questions to ask the group. Last night, one members' questions were, "How do you express your anger" and "Do you think it is healthy for you and your relationships?"
After reading an interesting article about Sean Penn living in a pup tent in Haiti with only one change of clothes, I asked the group, "When, if ever, have you lived with very little in terms of possessions?" "How did you feel?"
I blogged the other day about the new research on the benefits of meaningful conversations and I certainly experienced that benefit last night.

TV Appearance on In Session

Were you cool in High School or a nerd?
I was such a nerdette in High School, humm I may still be.

Today I was on Facebook responding to a girlfriend from Junior High and High School. She contacted me after we happened to be interviewed on the same TV show on the same day. The show was IN SESSION and my friend was the prosecuting attorney on the murder case we were discussing. It certainly was interesting to watch the little girl who use to show up at my door in her red pigtails to walk with me to school interviewing a convicted murderer.
I knew she would go far. Now she is the countries leading authority of Munchausen by proxy syndrome. It is so interesting seeing what all my fellow nerdy friends are doing now.

My red pigtailed friend and I went to Winter Park high and to Peachtree Presbyterian Church. With our other friends we formed a group we called the "Pick of the Crop." We had matching T shirts and I wrote our own theme song. Goodness, we had fun.

On a serious note if you are wondering, Munchausen by proxy syndrome (MBPS) involves a parent or caregiver misleading others into thinking that a child has medical problems by exaggerating, fabricating, or inducing illness in their children. If you watched the movie "The Sixth Sense" then you saw an example of a mother with the syndrome.

The Use of the Word Literally as an Indication of Deception

My friends and I get a kick out of language quirks and fun ways makerters and advertisers describe their products, incrediants and benefits. In addition, we have been talking about the overuse of the word Literally. This made for a very fun time Wednesday when a friend and I went to a makeup class. My friend was a senior editor at NASA and a Senior Partner at Towers Perin in charge of Communication.
I was holding in my laughter wishing I could see her face every time the makeup artist told us that another product could "literally" make us more gorgeous. And it was," litterally" going deep into our pores. I especially got a hoot from his long description of the minerals in the deep sea water. "This makeup contains the deep sea water taken from water over a mile down in the oceans of Japan." "It takes "literally" thousands of years for the sea water to collect the minerals." And those deep sea minerals "literally" bond naturally to your skin and make it beautiful." (Smile) It was a wonderful example of how some people use the word "literally" to describe things they don't truly understand but want to appear confident discussing. It is not an indication of an overt deception. That is, they are not thinking, "I am going to lie", but more a subconscious desire to look knowledgeable.

I think BP oil is accelerating the mineral buildup in deep sea water. I mean that "Literally."
Who knew that BP Oil was just helping us become more beautiful?

Manicured nails and DISC Personality of celebrities?

I am in a frivolous mood today. I have been thinking about manicures. Personally, I wear my fingernails short and I use a faintly pink clear polish. After many years wearing long lovely silk wrapped nails I no longer like being a slave to my manicure. I like to work in the yard, type, cook and carry my own suitcase. Fragile manicures take a lot of time. When I was in college, I didn't wear make up or high heels but I did my own nails every single day. I do love having pretty nails I just don't want to not do something fun because I have to "save my manicure."
A recent blog discusses what your manicure nails say about you and celebrities personalities.

I think I should start looking at manicures so I can read DISC personality type by a woman's finger nail polish selection.
The buffed casual look that Jennifer Aniston's say, "I'm laid back, but I still care about how I look." Very appropriate for the California girl and longstanding America's sweetheart.
My freind Judith has flawless, short red nails. Short red nails say classic and meticulous to us — Think Jennifer Garner. She's one celebrity who has never made any embarrassing moves and tends towards the simple and understated when it comes to her style cho
Tried & TrueBlack nails have been happening for a while now. And Kim Kardashian is definitely a trend follower, as well as someone who goes with the same look pretty much every time she goes out. She's a creature of habit, but maybe it's time she started playing around with a new shade.

Drama QueenOn the opposite end of the spectrum, you've got Heidi Montag. While Chanel may be classic, wearing the interlocking Cs on your nails is really about grabbing attention. It's a flashy choice, to be sure.

Fashion FanLonger, pointy nails like Selita Ebanks' are all the rage on high fashion runways at the moment. As a model, it's not surprising that she is right on trend. Wearing this shape definitely tells people you're fashion-forward.

A Reson to Have Meaningful Conversations,

On Thursday nights I meet with a group of friends to have lively and meaningful conversation. We call our group The Meeting of the Minds. Stimulating conversation may actually help you feel better according to new research In Psychological Science.
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=skip-the-small-talk
The research found that the happiest subjects spent 70 percent more time talking than the unhappiest ones. Though even the researchers aren't sure whether happier people talk more or the talking makes people happy.
I have tons of posts here on the importance of face to face interaction. I am really pleased to see research on this.

Are Facebook Profiles Honest?

New research on Facebook profiles indicate that people reveal more of their true personalities than one might guess.
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=honesty-online
When you scan someone’s profile, you probably expect a little fudging: an overly flattering photograph, a generously phrased blurb in the “about me” section. A study in the March issue of Psychological Science, however, suggests that Facebook users do not skew their profiles to reflect idealistic visions of themselves.

In the study, research assistants at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Mainz in Germany viewed the Facebook profile of a study participant, then guessed how he or she would score on the “big five” common personality measures used in psych?ological research: extroversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness and conscientiousness. Next they compared the results based on Facebook with the actual personality test scores from the profile owner and the results from four of his or her “well-acquainted friends,” who also rated the person’s personality traits. The research assistants were successful on four of the five measures—all except neuroticism, which is notoriously to gauge in general.

High heel shoes and history, attraction

Over the years many magazines have asked me about the nonverbal implications of high heels. I have shared historical reference's. For example high shoes in prerevolutionary France where used to both show status and more practically elevated the upper classes above the filth in the streets. In other cultures the platform shoes worn by women made their step smaller and generally made walking difficult. Some historians said the heels kept women from running away from their husbands or able to sneak out for a quick visit with a man on the side. In any case, the high heels makes it difficult for a woman to walk comfortably and certainly, girls in high heels on a basketball court or running track are merely the stuff of fanciful advertisements rather than reality.
High heels make a woman paradoxically tilt her pelvis forward and stand on her toes as if she is about to run if a woman is about to run from a starting block, but the high heel in back clunks her back to a tiny step. The tilt makes a woman look elongated as well as ready for intimacy. This is attractive to men, and easier for them to catch us!
Here is more info on the history of heels.

Shoes

There is a very simple trick to forgetting your troubles.
Wear uncomfortable shoes!
This is an unusually light entry.
II certainly experienced the trick of, "forgetting your troubles by wearing uncomfortable shoes feeling Thursday when I wore my incredibly cute shoes from Nordstoms to do a four hour speech. I felt tall, which is sensation my little five foot one self rarely feels, but once I finished speaking and started walking towards the parking lot all I could think of was my poor little feet. Women have been wearing uncomfortable shoes for eons, and Sex and City ladies made it not just acceptable but a sign of coolness for a woman to spend far too much on shoes. (Reference to the I am the old women who lives in her shoes episode.) I am not a fan of the show Sex in the City, but I am a fan of fashion. In fact, it should be obvious from my opening story, I am not really a shoe girl. I am a cute little suit jacket that will look good on TV girl. But I certainly notice a cute pair being worn by some cute woman who will be complaining about her sore feet later that night. Just look at the shoes on the women on Dancing with the Stars and tell me those woman aren't a little crazy! They are lovely, but crazy. They are talented, but crazy, brave, but crazy.

Whatever you thought of the Spice Girls, they always wore some notable shoes. I Wonder what kind of footwear their reunion will bring.
Finding the perfect pair of shoes for any given outfit or occasion can be a little tricky. Of course, having a team of stylists and the world's top shoe designers at your disposal should help some.

Voice and Emotion

In fact, unlike other aspects of language prosody is universal. Emotional intonations are similar across all cultures. (Look at research done by Azia-Sadeh) I believe that some of the problems that people are having today with social interactions via email, text, Facebook and other similar mediums in the lack of the the access to Prosody and with the cell phone conversation that loss of quality sound makes it more difficult to read all of paralanguage. I have the new Iphone. And though I tell my friends if my Iphone could cuddle on the coach I would date it, the truth is I find the sound quality poor and have experienced frustration listening to people on the Iphone and not being able to read them accurately. In fact, I find I am interrupting friends asking if they are "still there." because I can't hear one of the most important factors of turn taking, breathing.

When I coach executives on public speaking skills we discuss the importance of communicating emotions. Reading notes or PowerPoint slides or any kind of list such a bullet pointed lists on a slide automatically make your voice go monotone.Creating a unemotional voice, boring and because emotions are one of the strongest links to memory, unmemorable!

Your Voice Communicates Emotions Through Paralanguage, Dogs Understand Our Nonverbal Cues

People and to Dogs, What is Paralanguage?
Understanding the "tone" of someone’s speech well is related to your ability to be empathetic.

The variance in pitch and rhythm of the voice called prosody (a subset of paralanguage) conveys emotion in the voice. Because dogs are unusually adept at reading human body language and paralanguage they understand what you prosody is saying. You may have experienced that when praising or chastising your dog. If you say, "bad boy." to a dog using a loving happy voice your dog will probably respond as if you have praised him, by coming in closer to you, wagging his tail and or licking your face. Just as saying "You are a great dog" in a loud, mean, strident, attacking voice may make cause your dog to retreat and or crouch low and bring down his head. The pitch and rhythm of the voice can affect how your dog responds to you.
Prosody is not only the way dogs understand and read emotions, human also understand the emotions communicated through prosidy.

The End of Men, Gender differances, Atlantic article.

The guys in our Thursday night Meeting of the Minds discussion group have been talking a great deal about the article in The Atlantic called, "The End of Men." By Hanna Rosin. It is actually a rather depressing article and I think a rather biased editorial. But, extremely thought provoking. As an expert in body language and someone who speaks to corporations on gender differences I know I see power shifts and unhappiness in roles for both men and women. The article begins with the statement, "Earlier this year, women became the majority of the workforce for the first time in U.S. history. Most managers are now women too. And for every two men who get a college degree degree this year, three women will do the same. For years, women’s progress has been cast as a struggle for equality. But what if equality isn’t the end point? What if modern, postindustrial society is simply better suited to women? A report on the unprecedented role reversal now under way— and its vast cultural consequences"

A link to the entire article http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2010/07/the-end-of-men/8135/
http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2010/07/the-end-of-men/8135/

The theory is that men are needed for industrial, and farm work physical jobs, but now jobs require social skills and women are more qualified and teachers are said to prefer the sweet smiling girls to the rough housing guys in their classes so girls are doing better in school.

Treat your partner like a dog to have a betther marriage.

Treat your partner like a dog to have a better marriage.
That's the advice in the following article with that title in the online version of the magazine "The Week." as the national spokesperson for Pup-peroni I agree that dogs give unconditional love, but can humans give loving communication to their spouses? Wouldn't it be great if every time we came home our sweetie ran to the door to great us and covered us with kisses? If your dog jumps when you get home and you don't like to get paw prints and your pants get down on their level. They are usually jumping in an attempt to smell your breath and identify you and find out what you have been up to. Yes, a breath check tells them that you have been eating pizza without them! If you are looking for more on greeting your two legged sweetie check out my have blogs under greeting. I believe its true. Deception, Truth, and Body Language

I was recently sent a question.

"Patti, over the past few weeks I've been doing research on body language. I just have a quick question that I haven't been able to figure out an answer to;Although, I'm not sure if you're the right person to ask or not I figured it couldn't hurt to try. Can someone say something that they believe 100% but their body language will say they don't or that they aren't telling the truth?
That is not a question that can be answered simply. Believing something to be true with the conscious mind is different that feeling or sensing something is true with the more primitive brain. The neo cortex can rationally think I trust this person, but the primal brain can read cues the neo cortex can't and no the person cannot be trusted. So the person can say, "I trust this guy." Using words that are formulated in the rational brain and yet give off nonverbal cues controlled by the primal brain that may indicate a lack of trust.
You can also begin to "believe your own lies" after telling a story so many times and so no longer give off the normal cues of deception that are given off when someone feels guilty or nervous about being discovered.
