Dakota Fanning and Jamie Strachan A Couple Body Language Expert Read

Goodness they are both sleep deprived!
There are subtle signs he is not quite into her. Though you know that any guy at a ball game is going to be somewhat distracted.  The arch of his shoulders in and away from her and both his hands are caressing his smart phone not her. Though his face is slightly towards her the mouth is down. This all may be a response to being photographed but he is tired and not up and happy in this snap. She is tired but feels protected behind him. Her chin is not just posed but fully resting with significant weight put on his shoulder. That shows her trust in him and along with her subtle last night I was loved well smile and arm encircled around his arm lets me know she wants him and feels safe with him.

Patti did a body language read of Robin Thicke and his wife, Paula Patton, for OK Magazine concerning the state of their relationship and how they're responding to one another since the cheating scandal this week after a photo of him visibly grabbing a blonde girl's butt at a VMA after party surfaced. Paula has responded by saying that "they're not concerned."  You can read Patti's insights on what their body language reveals in OK Magazine.

Life & Style PDA of Gwen and Gavin

Synchronized step with both of their pelvises angled in slightly. Terrific mutual hand hold where they both lift each other up, and something you rarely see, though they are walking, both have their heads turned significantly to "admiration" position, so they are looking at each other equally with love. Chins up in happiness. I rate them Five out of Five

Body Language of Olivia Wilde and Jason Sudeikis in Life & Style

Everything about their body language in this photo makes you smile. Jason is leaning in at 3:00 position with his shoulder.  A  shoulder lean that indicates this woman I feel totally relaxed being around. Though he seems to be blocking her getting in to close with his elbow he is actually using his right arm and curled to hold fingers to do a symbolic reach across his pelvis towards her across his pelvis. That combination says if there were not people around I would be doing more.  The eye contact and mutual smile they are giving the photographers show they want to be seen as a happy couple together. Olivia's head tilt and resting on him, and chin down eyes and smile up are so unusually coy and sweet.  Showing Jason makes her feel safe being a playful little girl with him and combined with her head resting on his shoulder and her lean in and hand around him to show she is smitten.  He is more into her at an athletic event than I typically see men be with their sweeties and if his arm was slightly different I would give them a five, but with that block I would give it a four.

Body Language Read of Kate Bosworth and New Husband Michael Polish

Love that he is actually going backwards a bit to look at and hold onto Kate.  His head tilt and their mutual eye contact, even through sunglasses, says they are so into each other. I love that she reaches up and over his shoulders. That tells me she wants everyone to know he belongs to her. His arm is around her in support.  Nice smile!  I give them a 5 out of five.

Body Language of Kiss Between Simon Cowell and Lauren Silverman

It’s all about sex and assertiveness for Simon. Notice that he juts his head and leans the top half of his body assertively forward to kiss her but does not use his forward hand and arm to touch her nor tilt his head to show tenderness. Just a "She's mine" fast ownership kiss.  The hand  that is showing is actually held fist like.

Lauren feels brought down and fearful of Simon. Lauren Silverman doesn't lean into the kiss and her whole body is actually held down in protection. Lauren is leaning back and holds her shoulders drooping down. Lauren's arms are folded and hands locked in log cabin cross protectively over her belly arms and hands down.

Jason Dufner, What does Dufnering mean? A body language read of Dufner

A client at Exxon asked me what I thought about Jason Dufner’s checked out facial
expression and the new term for this the emotional state or should I say anti-emotional
state of “Dufnering.”

As a body language expert I say, “Hurray there is a name for the expression I see on most of the people waiting for late flights out of Atlanta airport.  Many of you have heard me talk about down vs. up body language I think this is the perfect photo for down!  Look at his shoulders and chest and the downward pull of his mouth. If you took on this expression and posture right now research on the mind body connection indicates that you would feel as checked out as Dufner.

Brad and Angelina's PDA - What it Reveals

Patti shared her insights with Life & Style on the PDA of Brad and Angelina recently while they were in Japan.  Patti commented that Angelina's eyes were focused on Brad, and her body is completely open toward him.  Angelina is saying with her body language that she loves him and it is all about him.  Also, Brad is "sharing" his cheek, leaning it toward Angelina.  He is happily receiving her love.

How to Spot a Liar

Patti was interviewed on HLN about how to tell when someone is lying.  Watch the HLN interview at the link below and check out Patti's 6 tips below!

http://www.hlntv.com/video/2013/08/13/body-language-indicates-lie

So, you’ve got a funny feeling about the guy or gal you’re dating. Or you don’t think your boss is leveling with you.

How can you tell if they are lying? Here are some tips from body language expert Patti Wood.
  1. Trust your gut: You may know they are lying to you before you are even aware of it. Encountering a lie can provoke a stress response in most of us – the old flight or fight feeling. If something doesn’t quite sound right, and you feel as though they aren’t being straight with you, you may be right.
  2. Interrupt the story: A practiced liar will have their story down pat. They’ll have the details down, in order of what happened. But you can trip them up by interrupting, or asking questions in reverse order of how events happened. If you can throw them off, they may stumble over their story, and you can confirm they aren’t being honest.
  3. Pay attention to body language: If you know how someone normally acts, and they are acting differently, that may be a sign that he or she is lying. Say you have a friend who is naturally fidgety. If they are moving around a lot like they normally do, it may not be a sign they are lying. But the person who usually sits there quietly, still as a statue, and then can’t seem to sit still… that could be an indication of deceit.
  4. Oddball reaction: If you ask a question and someone gets angry, or annoyed, or hysterical, in a way that doesn’t fit your conversation… you may have stumbled onto a lie. People can act out to distract us from their deceit. Anger is always a useful device. A liar can turn on the fury, unload on you, and shame you into not asking the kinds of questions that might expose their lie. Watch for a reaction that seems totally out of proportion to your question. That may be a clue.
  5. Unusual language: Is someone talking to you in a stilted way, avoiding contractions, saying “I did not…” instead of “I didn’t.” Any kind of odd sentence could be a hint that someone is lying. For example, someone telling the truth won’t say over and over again “I did not do _____.” They will say “I didn’t do it” and leave it at that.
  6. Reassuring touches: When we are nervous, our nerve endings can start firing, and we can start to touch facial features that we might ordinarily leave alone. Such as our nose, the top of our lip, and the edge of the ear. Again, this clue depends on timing and knowing how the person behaves normally. If they never touch their nose, then suddenly can’t seem to stop touching it, that could be a sign they are lying.

Revealing Body Language of Jason Sudeikis and Olivia Wilde

During a recent night out in NYC's Meatpacking District, Jason Sudeikis, 37, just couldn't resist pulling in his fiancee Olivia Wilde, 29, for a sweet kiss. Patti shared with Life & Style, "They are toe to toe," observes Wood, "their pelvises are touching and their hearts are centered on each other. It shows equal affection. And I just love the way he wraps his arms around her and draws her in close. They are non-verbally telling each other that they want to merge into one."

Zayn Malik & Perrie Edwards’ PDA: They Have ‘Love & Respect’

Patti Wood, author of Snap! Making The Most of First Impressions, adds that “Perrie is really calm in these photos. She looks happy and centered.”
What I love is that he is taking the lead; he is coming forward the right way. He is looking at her hand, looking at the ring.  Her cheeks are lifted, showing extreme happiness. They are both connected and happy in that moment. If you look down at the hand, it looks like he is coming up and lifting it. That in combination with stepping forward shows he can support her.

Space Invasion, When People Get too Close

I’m about to speak to a group of CEOs in Florida.  I notice that two of the group members are standing side-to-side, feet in a guy relaxed stance talking together laughing and eating bagels. Another CEO, the only guy in the meeting wearing a tie approaches them.  Their entire bodies change and turn to face the Tie guy each enlarging their bodies and moving their feet far apart.  In a brief minute they are exchanging thousands of cues.  It is clear to me these guys aren’t going to share the bagels or anything else with Tie guy but Tie guy doesn’t pick up on the cues.  Research shows that in just one minute you can exchange up to 10,000 nonverbal cues.

This example specifically was Proxemics- how people use and perceive space.  Adults typically have more control of their face and upper bodies but the feet are under less conscious control.

The broader your stance typically the more powerful you feel or want to feel. There’s physics to it!  The more space you take up the less of a push over you are as well as the message of power you send to others.

So note, our feet communicate exactly what we think and feel more honestly than other parts of our bodies. (Morris, 1985, 244) Generally, people are focused on controlling their facial expressions, torsos and upper body while communicating.  The feet are vital to us responding to danger and stress and we need them to freeze, flee, fight, or fall.

When you’re monitoring yourself check out your feet how you feel about yourself the topic or situation and the other person or people you are with.

The CEOs eating bagels in the story changed their stances from relaxed to what I call a Toe Stop position. A position people, mainly men, take when they are standing side-by-side with their buddies in agreement, talking to equals and relaxed. When Tie guy approached they went into what I call lock and load position. True Grit ready to go for their guns. It is an alpha/ready to attack or defend stance.

Julia Roberts' Niece, Emma Roberts and Evan Peters' Body Language as a Couple since the Domestic Violence Charge

Patti was asked to read the body language of Emma Roberts and Evan Peters in the pic below by Life and Style Magazine.  Her comments will be in next Wednesday's issue in the PDA section.

That is doozy of a story. I can't see her hand closest to him.  Really they are walking beautifully in sync with one another.  See how the toes are down in the same spot on the ball of the foot on their back foot and on the heel of the foot on the front foot.   Exactly in step and looking down at the same spot which means  (I remember the first photo I read of Julia with her then new boyfriend now husband where they were walking in sync and I said for a mag" This it. This is her love"

Getting back to them, I do see that she is using her artifact (purse papers and scarf) to block her heart, but it could be the photographer.

What I think is most interesting is that he is so cautiously putting his hand around her. See how the upper arm, elbow and forearm are not touching her and the hand is flat. It is a very polite way of showing affection and protection and not the usual arm wrap of love and ownership.

From the photo alone I would give them a 3.

Here is a piece I did later on Julia with all her boyfriends. http://www.pattiwood.net/uploads/Julia%20Roberts%20Body%20Language%20US%20mag.pdf

Patti on the TODAY SHOW, August 1, 2013 @ 8:20 a.m.

WHY ARE WE SO UNCOMFORTABLE BEING CLOSE UP WITH STRANGERS?
Forced, close distances get intense at 2 feet.  Arm’s length, our bodies go into a “Stranger Danger” stress response. You have heard of the flight fight response it’s more complex. Close strangers may make you want to freeze in place, flee, expand into fight response, faint or fade.

WHY ARE ELEVATORS SO ESPECIALLY AWKWARD?
People coming in face forward into your space feels like an attack and invasion. And once you’re trapped in that space there are no lines on the floor saying this is my space that is yours. That’s why people hang out at the button panel; it gives them a defined role space.

HOW CLOSE CAN WE GET TO ANOTHER PERSON?
In North America our sense of self is external so we have a body bubble that has expanded to 18 inches.

WHAT IS THE DISTANCE WE ARE ALL GENERALLY COMFORTABLE WITH?
Intimate relationships 0 to 18 inches, for people we know but aren’t going to be kissing 2 feet in what is called personal distance. If we don’t know them and are confined we want 4 feet or more (Think two arm lengths.)

TALKING…WHY DO WE FEEL WE SHOLDN’T TALK TO STRANGERS IN CLOSE SPACES BUT SOMETIMES WE FEEL LIKE WE NEED TO?
Social proxemics

Typically When you have an intimate relationship, think friend or family, both your primitive, limbic brain and social rules say you can and should be physically close.  If you are forced to be close with a stranger you are battling the physical messages that say this is scary and the social etiquette that says, I should be nice, after all we’re close.

HOW DO WE SIGNAL THAT WE DON’T WANT TO ENGAGE? AND WHAT’S THAT ABOUT?
Subtle limbic brain responses called blocking and comfort cues.

WHAT ARE STRESS OR COMFORT CUES?
Blocking cues protect, comfort cues make us feel better. Rapid blinking or something I see in elevators eye shade, closing your eyes I don’t see you (or maybe you’re just napping), crossing your arms to protect your body’s vulnerable ventral front.

WHAT DO WE DO TO BLOCK AND COMFORT OURSELVES?
When mommy is not here to hold us we self-comfort.  This alerts the nerve endings and creates endorphins that make us feel better.

LET’S TALK ABOUT WHEN WE ARE STUCK SEATED NEXT TO SOMEBODY ELSE: ON A PLANE, IN A THEATRE, ON A TRAIN, ON A BUS, ETC… WHAT ARE SOME OF THE PHYSICAL THINGS WE DO TO CREATE A DISTANCE IF IT FEELS TOO CLOSE?
We may consciously avoid engagement leaning back or breaking eye contact by checking our phones or reading.  I have a theory that women’s huge purses are to make women bigger, mightier and give her something to use to block access.

IS THERE A GENDER DIFFERENCE?
This is huge. Men feel attacked when sitting or standing face-to- face.  (Think elevator) They tend to puff up, get bigger in fight response or shut down and not talk. Men feel more comfortable in side-by-side.  So men can sit close on stools at a bar.  Women are socialized to face and nurture children so if they are side-to-side and they want to start a conversation they will turn and face their hearts toward you.

ON AIRPLANES, THERE’S A PARTICULAR HEIGHTENED SENSE OF DISCOMFORT WHEN TALKING TO THE STRANGER SITTING NEXT TO US. IS IT TRUE? AND WHY IS THAT?
You are on a small plane hurtling in the air and there is no place to run. If you’re a frequent flyer,  you know that seats use to give you six inches of elbow room from your torso but now seats put you in an intimate space less than 12 inches head to head.

OVERALL ANY GENERAL WORDS OF ADVICE OR TIPS TO MAKE CLOSE SPACES WITH STRANGERS LESS AWKWARD AND MORE COMFORTABLE?
If you want to ease stress, establish commonality, something that signals we are in this together state something you have in common, the weather, the temperature in the plane or train, the coffee.

PDA of the Week with Patti for Life & Style

Even though Bradley Cooper, 38, kept his eyes on the tennis match at Wimbledon in London on July 5, he was clearly happy to receive a snuggle from his new love, model Suki Waterhouse, 21.  "I like that he's subtly leaning in," observes Wood.  "He's lifting his shoulder up a little bit to cuddle with her as well."  As for Suki, "she's really pressing into his cheek, so she feels really comfortable with him."

Zimmerman wieght gain

I think the weight gain is protection a way for Zimmerman to protect himself. Excessive weight gain can be a way of  shielding and armoring your body from past or future psychological harm. Patti Wood

George Zimmerman has gained 105 pounds in the year since he shot Trayvon Martin. His lawyers are citing his weight gain as a sign of his emotional distress and mental state in their effort to postpone his criminal trial, which is set to start in June.
From the Orlando Sentinel:
Zimmerman is currently free on $1 million bail, awaiting trial on a charge of second-degree murder. He has said he killed the teenager in self-defense after Trayvon knocked him to the ground with a punch that broke his nose then began pounding his head on the sidewalk.
Before his arrest, according to the website, Zimmerman lived out of state in a mobile home, but a judge ordered his return to Seminole County, and that has been more expensive. For a time, Zimmerman and his wife lived in series of hotels. In September, they found a home with more reasonable rent, the website said.
Neither Zimmerman nor his wife has jobs, O’Mara said. George Zimmerman spends all day thinking about the second-degree murder case against him and has gained 105 pounds, the attorney said.

So Ho Sylvie Murder Case Body Language of Nicholas Brooks on Dr. Drew

So Ho Sylvie Murder Case Body Language of Nicholas Brooks on Dr. Drew. Here is the read.

So Ho Murder Case, Patti Wood on Dr. Drew,

Here

Sylvie Cachay, a promising New York fashion designer, had a dangerous chemistry with her playboy boyfriend, the son of an Academy Award-winning composer. They were only together six months, but they fought like crazy and made up the same way, friends say.
But on Dec. 9, 2010, Cachay's body was found in an overflowing bathtub at a members-only hotel in the Meatpacking District, among the trendiest neighborhoods in the city. She was dressed in a thick black sweater and pink and blue underwear. The faucet was on full blast. Her boyfriend, Nicholas Brooks, was absent — she was discovered by hotel workers responding to a leaky ceiling in the room below. But his DNA was on the faucet, prosecutors said.
The case was a tabloid sensation. "Death at the Soho House: Beauty in the Bath," read the New York Post cover.
Brooks, 25, is now on trial for murder after prosecutors said he strangled the 33-year-old inside the Soho House hotel room because she tried to end their tumultuous relationship. The case is expected to go until early July.
"It was an act as ruthless as it was cowardly," Assistant District Attorney Jordan Arnold said during opening statements.

Brooks has pleaded not guilty. His defense attorney Jeffrey Hoffman suggested Cachay drowned accidentally, passing out from an overdose of prescription pills she took to treat migraines and fibromyalgia, a disorder that causes widespread pain in the body. He said investigators rushed to arrest Brooks because they needed a fast suspect in the high-profile killing that became national news.
"There had to be immediate satisfaction to the press and to the publicity," Hoffman said.
The two were introduced by a friend in 2010, and were on one of their first dates when Cachay's teacup poodle Pepper was run over by a car. She had to euthanize the dog, and Brooks comforted her. The trauma bonded them, her friends said. But the two were constantly on-again, off-again. Cachay didn't like that they would drink too

June 30, 2013

  at 10:30 a.m.

Be sure to tune in!

  From the shows host.
The show you will be a guest on is in it's 5th year./ It is called the Water Cooler and we talk about sports, health, wealth, lifestyle

and anything else people are talking about that week around the water cooler.

We spend we spend a lot of time talking with guests about a very wide range of topics that you would not expect to hear discussed on a sports channel. I will also add guests around your spot that can speak to topics that relate in some way to body language, first impressions etc. .

People like, Hank Hays (successful entrepreneur, author, and one of the top trainers of military and law enforcement personal and all levels

Some things that interest me are:

-           The body language of coaches and players in sports and how body language may or may not influence performance.

-          The body language of people in politics who may be presenting information that is not truthful.

-          I would think that the body language of dating would be a topic that would grab the attention of many listeners?

I know we will be talking about handshakes as the host shared this question from a listener.
I mentioned to a listener that you would be on ESPN radio on Sunday and that  you had done extensive researched handshakes. She said she would love to know what your advise would be since she has suffered with arthritis since she was very young and that it hurts when someone shakes her hand too firmly.

Therefore, she often times avoids shaking hands because otherwise prior to each handshake she has to inform the person she is about to greet about her situation. I never gave it much thought but I thought it was a good question
