Face to Face Conversations,The Benefit of Meaningful Conversations.

Last night our "Meeting of the Minds" discussion group talked about quite a few interesting topics. Among them the blog on the leak of the BP oil pipe and the candidates for the next Georgia election. Well, actually the lack of quality candidates. We always bring questions to ask the group. Last night, one members' questions were, "How do you express your anger" and "Do you think it is healthy for you and your relationships?"
After reading an interesting article about Sean Penn living in a pup tent in Haiti with only one change of clothes, I asked the group, "When, if ever, have you lived with very little in terms of possessions?" "How did you feel?"
I blogged the other day about the new research on the benefits of meaningful conversations and I certainly experienced that benefit last night.

TV Appearance on In Session

Were you cool in High School or a nerd?
I was such a nerdette in High School, humm I may still be.

Today I was on Facebook responding to a girlfriend from Junior High and High School. She contacted me after we happened to be interviewed on the same TV show on the same day. The show was IN SESSION and my friend was the prosecuting attorney on the murder case we were discussing. It certainly was interesting to watch the little girl who use to show up at my door in her red pigtails to walk with me to school interviewing a convicted murderer.
I knew she would go far. Now she is the countries leading authority of Munchausen by proxy syndrome. It is so interesting seeing what all my fellow nerdy friends are doing now.

My red pigtailed friend and I went to Winter Park high and to Peachtree Presbyterian Church. With our other friends we formed a group we called the "Pick of the Crop." We had matching T shirts and I wrote our own theme song. Goodness, we had fun.

On a serious note if you are wondering, Munchausen by proxy syndrome (MBPS) involves a parent or caregiver misleading others into thinking that a child has medical problems by exaggerating, fabricating, or inducing illness in their children. If you watched the movie "The Sixth Sense" then you saw an example of a mother with the syndrome.

The Use of the Word Literally as an Indication of Deception

My friends and I get a kick out of language quirks and fun ways makerters and advertisers describe their products, incrediants and benefits. In addition, we have been talking about the overuse of the word Literally. This made for a very fun time Wednesday when a friend and I went to a makeup class. My friend was a senior editor at NASA and a Senior Partner at Towers Perin in charge of Communication.
I was holding in my laughter wishing I could see her face every time the makeup artist told us that another product could "literally" make us more gorgeous. And it was," litterally" going deep into our pores. I especially got a hoot from his long description of the minerals in the deep sea water. "This makeup contains the deep sea water taken from water over a mile down in the oceans of Japan." "It takes "literally" thousands of years for the sea water to collect the minerals." And those deep sea minerals "literally" bond naturally to your skin and make it beautiful." (Smile) It was a wonderful example of how some people use the word "literally" to describe things they don't truly understand but want to appear confident discussing. It is not an indication of an overt deception. That is, they are not thinking, "I am going to lie", but more a subconscious desire to look knowledgeable.

I think BP oil is accelerating the mineral buildup in deep sea water. I mean that "Literally."
Who knew that BP Oil was just helping us become more beautiful?

Manicured nails and DISC Personality of celebrities?

I am in a frivolous mood today. I have been thinking about manicures. Personally, I wear my fingernails short and I use a faintly pink clear polish. After many years wearing long lovely silk wrapped nails I no longer like being a slave to my manicure. I like to work in the yard, type, cook and carry my own suitcase. Fragile manicures take a lot of time. When I was in college, I didn't wear make up or high heels but I did my own nails every single day. I do love having pretty nails I just don't want to not do something fun because I have to "save my manicure."
A recent blog discusses what your manicure nails say about you and celebrities personalities.

I think I should start looking at manicures so I can read DISC personality type by a woman's finger nail polish selection.
The buffed casual look that Jennifer Aniston's say, "I'm laid back, but I still care about how I look." Very appropriate for the California girl and longstanding America's sweetheart.
My freind Judith has flawless, short red nails. Short red nails say classic and meticulous to us — Think Jennifer Garner. She's one celebrity who has never made any embarrassing moves and tends towards the simple and understated when it comes to her style cho
Tried & TrueBlack nails have been happening for a while now. And Kim Kardashian is definitely a trend follower, as well as someone who goes with the same look pretty much every time she goes out. She's a creature of habit, but maybe it's time she started playing around with a new shade.

Drama QueenOn the opposite end of the spectrum, you've got Heidi Montag. While Chanel may be classic, wearing the interlocking Cs on your nails is really about grabbing attention. It's a flashy choice, to be sure.

Fashion FanLonger, pointy nails like Selita Ebanks' are all the rage on high fashion runways at the moment. As a model, it's not surprising that she is right on trend. Wearing this shape definitely tells people you're fashion-forward.

A Reson to Have Meaningful Conversations,

On Thursday nights I meet with a group of friends to have lively and meaningful conversation. We call our group The Meeting of the Minds. Stimulating conversation may actually help you feel better according to new research In Psychological Science.
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=skip-the-small-talk
The research found that the happiest subjects spent 70 percent more time talking than the unhappiest ones. Though even the researchers aren't sure whether happier people talk more or the talking makes people happy.
I have tons of posts here on the importance of face to face interaction. I am really pleased to see research on this.

Are Facebook Profiles Honest?

New research on Facebook profiles indicate that people reveal more of their true personalities than one might guess.
http://www.scientificamerican.com/article.cfm?id=honesty-online
When you scan someone’s profile, you probably expect a little fudging: an overly flattering photograph, a generously phrased blurb in the “about me” section. A study in the March issue of Psychological Science, however, suggests that Facebook users do not skew their profiles to reflect idealistic visions of themselves.

In the study, research assistants at the University of Texas at Austin and the University of Mainz in Germany viewed the Facebook profile of a study participant, then guessed how he or she would score on the “big five” common personality measures used in psych?ological research: extroversion, agreeableness, neuroticism, openness and conscientiousness. Next they compared the results based on Facebook with the actual personality test scores from the profile owner and the results from four of his or her “well-acquainted friends,” who also rated the person’s personality traits. The research assistants were successful on four of the five measures—all except neuroticism, which is notoriously to gauge in general.

High heel shoes and history, attraction

Over the years many magazines have asked me about the nonverbal implications of high heels. I have shared historical reference's. For example high shoes in prerevolutionary France where used to both show status and more practically elevated the upper classes above the filth in the streets. In other cultures the platform shoes worn by women made their step smaller and generally made walking difficult. Some historians said the heels kept women from running away from their husbands or able to sneak out for a quick visit with a man on the side. In any case, the high heels makes it difficult for a woman to walk comfortably and certainly, girls in high heels on a basketball court or running track are merely the stuff of fanciful advertisements rather than reality.
High heels make a woman paradoxically tilt her pelvis forward and stand on her toes as if she is about to run if a woman is about to run from a starting block, but the high heel in back clunks her back to a tiny step. The tilt makes a woman look elongated as well as ready for intimacy. This is attractive to men, and easier for them to catch us!
Here is more info on the history of heels.

Shoes

There is a very simple trick to forgetting your troubles.
Wear uncomfortable shoes!
This is an unusually light entry.
II certainly experienced the trick of, "forgetting your troubles by wearing uncomfortable shoes feeling Thursday when I wore my incredibly cute shoes from Nordstoms to do a four hour speech. I felt tall, which is sensation my little five foot one self rarely feels, but once I finished speaking and started walking towards the parking lot all I could think of was my poor little feet. Women have been wearing uncomfortable shoes for eons, and Sex and City ladies made it not just acceptable but a sign of coolness for a woman to spend far too much on shoes. (Reference to the I am the old women who lives in her shoes episode.) I am not a fan of the show Sex in the City, but I am a fan of fashion. In fact, it should be obvious from my opening story, I am not really a shoe girl. I am a cute little suit jacket that will look good on TV girl. But I certainly notice a cute pair being worn by some cute woman who will be complaining about her sore feet later that night. Just look at the shoes on the women on Dancing with the Stars and tell me those woman aren't a little crazy! They are lovely, but crazy. They are talented, but crazy, brave, but crazy.

Whatever you thought of the Spice Girls, they always wore some notable shoes. I Wonder what kind of footwear their reunion will bring.
Finding the perfect pair of shoes for any given outfit or occasion can be a little tricky. Of course, having a team of stylists and the world's top shoe designers at your disposal should help some.

Voice and Emotion

In fact, unlike other aspects of language prosody is universal. Emotional intonations are similar across all cultures. (Look at research done by Azia-Sadeh) I believe that some of the problems that people are having today with social interactions via email, text, Facebook and other similar mediums in the lack of the the access to Prosody and with the cell phone conversation that loss of quality sound makes it more difficult to read all of paralanguage. I have the new Iphone. And though I tell my friends if my Iphone could cuddle on the coach I would date it, the truth is I find the sound quality poor and have experienced frustration listening to people on the Iphone and not being able to read them accurately. In fact, I find I am interrupting friends asking if they are "still there." because I can't hear one of the most important factors of turn taking, breathing.

When I coach executives on public speaking skills we discuss the importance of communicating emotions. Reading notes or PowerPoint slides or any kind of list such a bullet pointed lists on a slide automatically make your voice go monotone.Creating a unemotional voice, boring and because emotions are one of the strongest links to memory, unmemorable!

Your Voice Communicates Emotions Through Paralanguage, Dogs Understand Our Nonverbal Cues

People and to Dogs, What is Paralanguage?
Understanding the "tone" of someone’s speech well is related to your ability to be empathetic.

The variance in pitch and rhythm of the voice called prosody (a subset of paralanguage) conveys emotion in the voice. Because dogs are unusually adept at reading human body language and paralanguage they understand what you prosody is saying. You may have experienced that when praising or chastising your dog. If you say, "bad boy." to a dog using a loving happy voice your dog will probably respond as if you have praised him, by coming in closer to you, wagging his tail and or licking your face. Just as saying "You are a great dog" in a loud, mean, strident, attacking voice may make cause your dog to retreat and or crouch low and bring down his head. The pitch and rhythm of the voice can affect how your dog responds to you.
Prosody is not only the way dogs understand and read emotions, human also understand the emotions communicated through prosidy.

The End of Men, Gender differances, Atlantic article.

The guys in our Thursday night Meeting of the Minds discussion group have been talking a great deal about the article in The Atlantic called, "The End of Men." By Hanna Rosin. It is actually a rather depressing article and I think a rather biased editorial. But, extremely thought provoking. As an expert in body language and someone who speaks to corporations on gender differences I know I see power shifts and unhappiness in roles for both men and women. The article begins with the statement, "Earlier this year, women became the majority of the workforce for the first time in U.S. history. Most managers are now women too. And for every two men who get a college degree degree this year, three women will do the same. For years, women’s progress has been cast as a struggle for equality. But what if equality isn’t the end point? What if modern, postindustrial society is simply better suited to women? A report on the unprecedented role reversal now under way— and its vast cultural consequences"

A link to the entire article http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2010/07/the-end-of-men/8135/
http://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2010/07/the-end-of-men/8135/

The theory is that men are needed for industrial, and farm work physical jobs, but now jobs require social skills and women are more qualified and teachers are said to prefer the sweet smiling girls to the rough housing guys in their classes so girls are doing better in school.

Treat your partner like a dog to have a betther marriage.

Treat your partner like a dog to have a better marriage.
That's the advice in the following article with that title in the online version of the magazine "The Week." as the national spokesperson for Pup-peroni I agree that dogs give unconditional love, but can humans give loving communication to their spouses? Wouldn't it be great if every time we came home our sweetie ran to the door to great us and covered us with kisses? If your dog jumps when you get home and you don't like to get paw prints and your pants get down on their level. They are usually jumping in an attempt to smell your breath and identify you and find out what you have been up to. Yes, a breath check tells them that you have been eating pizza without them! If you are looking for more on greeting your two legged sweetie check out my have blogs under greeting. If you want to know the best way to greet your dog when you get home and I have a blog on that as well. I believe its true. Deception, Truth, and Body Language

I was recently sent a question.

"Patti, over the past few weeks I've been doing research on body language. I just have a quick question that I haven't been able to figure out an answer to;Although, I'm not sure if you're the right person to ask or not I figured it couldn't hurt to try. Can someone say something that they believe 100% but their body language will say they don't or that they aren't telling the truth?
That is not a question that can be answered simply. Believing something to be true with the conscious mind is different that feeling or sensing something is true with the more primitive brain. The neo cortex can rationally think I trust this person, but the primal brain can read cues the neo cortex can't and no the person cannot be trusted. So the person can say, "I trust this guy." Using words that are formulated in the rational brain and yet give off nonverbal cues controlled by the primal brain that may indicate a lack of trust.
You can also begin to "believe your own lies" after telling a story so many times and so no longer give off the normal cues of deception that are given off when someone feels guilty or nervous about being discovered.

They apologize for losing and for not giving 110 percent. But let's be honest, no one cares about that stuff. What we want is the scandal, the inappropriate comment and the juicy details. We also want closure. We want the apology, and you can't have one without the other.

Tiger Woods hopes apologizing for his personal indiscretions is the first step toward closure in the ugliest episode of his public life.

But before we rigorously overanalyze Woods' performance, Page 2 compiles the 25 most memorable apologies in sports history:

UPDATE: We selected our top 25 before Tiger Woods issued his statement, but it's only fitting that we now include Eldrick as a bonus apology. After all, he said he isn't above everyone else's rules.

Tiger Woods
The 411: We assume you haven't been living under a rock. Moving on …

The Apology: You can read his entire statement here but his message essentially was this: "I want to say to each of you, simply and directly, I am deeply sorry for my irresponsible and selfish behavior I engaged in."

The Aftermath: With Tiger apparently expecting to be away from golf for many more weekends, the economy will likely collapse and the average PGA Tour purse will bottom out at $12.50 (give or take 35 cents). Finally, Steve Stricker will become the Hakeem Olajuwon of golf, stepping to the forefront of the sport now that the best player on the planet is out of the way.

Now, back to your regularly scheduled list …

25. Scot Pollard
The 411: During a timeout in a Cleveland-Indiana game in March 2007, the Cavs center looked into a camera and said, "Hey kids, do drugs."

The Apology: Pollard: "It was a bad joke. That's all it boils down to. There are a number of things people could say about it, but it just turned out it was a bad joke. Obviously, I don't believe that."

The Aftermath: The Cavs did not re-sign Pollard after the '07 season, and he sat on the bench for most of his final NBA season with the Celtics in 2007-08. Yes, he has a championship ring.

Gilbert Arenas gave a whole new definition to the term "gun locker."24. Gilbert Arenas
The 411: The Wizards guard admitted he decided to store his unloaded gun collection in his locker at the Verizon Center after the birth of his child. Add a gambling-related argument with teammate Javaris Crittenton in December 2009 in which Crittenton reportedly threatened to shoot Arenas in his surgically repaired knee. Then, apparently as a joke, Arenas put his guns near Crittenton's locker and told him to pick one.

The Apology: After meeting with his attorney and authorities over potential felony gun possession charges, Arenas offered this apology: "Joke or not, I now recognize that what I did was a mistake and was wrong. I should not have brought the guns to D.C. in the first place, and I now realize that there's no such thing as joking around when it comes to guns -- even if unloaded."

The Aftermath: Arenas pleaded guilty to a felony charge of carrying a pistol without a license and NBA commissioner David Stern suspended Arenas for the remainder of the 2009-10 season, making this item suddenly much more affordable.

23. Josh McDaniels
The 411: In a December 2009 game against the Giants, NFL Network cameras caught the Broncos coach on the sideline berating his team with profanities tossed in for good measure.

The Apology: Although McDaniels shrugged off the incident after the game, he apologized a couple of days later, saying "Anybody that was offended by that, young or old, I know that's not the kind of example that I want to set or we want to set."

The Aftermath: When the Broncos missed the playoffs at 8-8 after a 6-0 start, it was probably Denver fans who turned to spicy language.

22. Terrelle Pryor
The 411: The Ohio State quarterback wrote "Vick" on the eye-black patch under his left eye during the Buckeyes' game against Navy, in support of controversial NFL quarterback Michael Vick. After the game, Pryor said, "Not everybody's the perfect person in the world. I mean everyone kills people, murders people, steals from you, steals from me, whatever. I think that people need a second chance, and I've always looked up to Mike Vick, and I always will."

The Apology: Pryor went on to apologize, adding, "Not to catch anyone's attention, [but] I'd do it again. He'd been a big role model as I was growing up, and I always looked up to Mike Vick. Maybe it was stupid to get involved in that, I shouldn't put myself in that position. But nothing against dogs, I love dogs and all that. He's out of jail and I looked up to him and he's a big role model. That's why I did it."

The Aftermath: Pryor recently underwent surgery on his right knee and, luckily for OSU, it wasn't performed by a doctor who kills and/or murders people.

21. Sean Avery
The 411: The NHL agitator, then playing with the Dallas Stars, made a point of waiting for cameras to be rolling before a December 2008 game against Calgary when, referring to his ex-girlfriend, actress Elisha Cuthbert, he said "I'm really happy to be back in Calgary; I love Canada. I just want to comment on how it's become like a common thing in the NHL for guys to fall in love with my sloppy seconds. I don't know what that's about, but enjoy the game tonight." (Cuthbert was dating Calgary's Dion Phaneuf at the time.)

The Apology: While en route to meet with NHL commissioner Gary Bettman, Avery added, "I would like to sincerely apologize for my off-color remarks to the press yesterday from Calgary. … It was a bad attempt to build excitement for the game, but I am now acutely aware of how hurtful my actions were."

The Aftermath: Avery was suspended six games without pay and ordered to undergo anger management therapy. Dallas coach Dave Tippett publicly criticized Avery, and the Stars waived the pesky winger, taking a sizable financial hit in the process. Avery ultimately landed on his skates when his previous team, the New York Rangers, claimed him and agreed to pick up half the money remaining on his contract. Sorry, fashion world, you're just going to have to wait a little longer for Sean.

It's tough to take Greg McMackin seriously when he's ensconced in flowers.20. Greg McMackin
The 411: At a news conference before the 2009 season, Hawaii coach Greg McMackin used a gay slur several times when describing a dance performed by Notre Dame players leading up to the '08 Hawaii Bowl. McMackin later explained he was trying to "be funny."

The Apology: After an initial apology, McMackin offered a more formal one through the university, saying "I sincerely apologize for the inappropriate words I used. My comments were out of character, and I have no prejudices against anyone. I'm really upset with myself and I'm truly sorry for my remarks."

The Aftermath: We'd like to point out the irony of a man who coaches a team once known as the Rainbow Warriors stooping to use a gay slur.

19. George Steinbrenner
The 411: After losing the 1981 World Series to the Dodgers despite winning the first two games, Yankees owner George Steinbrenner made one of his many fire- and brimstone-laced statements regarding the team's future.

The Apology: Steinbrenner: "I want to sincerely apologize to the people of New York and to the fans of the New York Yankees everywhere for the performance of the Yankee team in the World Series. I also want to assure you that we will be at work immediately to prepare for 1982.''

The Aftermath: The Yankees finished fifth in the AL East in '82, going through three managers in the process, and didn't make the playoffs again until '95 and didn't have another dynasty until they hired a new assistant to the traveling secretary.

18. Kobe Bryant
The 411: While in Colorado to undergo knee surgery, Lakers guard Kobe Bryant had what he claimed to be consensual sex with a female hotel employee. The woman claimed she was raped and filed charges. The ensuing case eventually was dropped when the accuser refused to testify in court.

The Apology: After purchasing a $4 million purple diamond ring for his wife, Bryant publicly apologized, saying that "although this year has been incredibly difficult for me personally, I can only imagine the pain [the accuser] has had to endure."

The Aftermath: After that season, Bryant signed a new contract to remain with the Lakers. Meantime, coach Phil Jackson left the team after his contract was not renewed, allegedly at Bryant's behest. Jackson then wrote a book in which he called Bryant "uncoachable." The two ultimately reconciled (it helped that Jackson was dating the daughter of the team's owner) and went on to win their fourth championship together in 2009. All of this is pretty much the exact plot of "Gossip Girl," Season 2. Seriously, just change the names.

17. Mark McGwire
The 411: After several denials and one notorious appearance before Congress in 2005, McGwire finally admitted to using steroids last month after being named batting coach of the St. Louis Cardinals.

The Apology: Speaking to The Associated Press, McGwire said "it's very emotional, it's telling family members, friends and coaches, you know, it's former teammates to try to get ahold of, you know, that I'm coming clean and being honest."

The Aftermath: Despite his impressive career statistics, McGwire's hasn't come close to receiving the number of votes required for Hall of Fame induction, but that doesn't bother him. McGwire sees great promise in his new partnership with manager Tony La Russa, adding "He's seen me grow as a person, he's seen me grow as a hitter." And about eight hat sizes, too.

16. Joey Porter
The 411: While playing for the Steelers, the linebacker used a gay slur to describe the play of rival tight end Kellen Winslow.

The Apology: Although citing that "it was a poor choice of words," and "if I offended anybody, I apologize for that," Porter also added, "I didn't mean to offend nobody but Kellen Winslow."

The Aftermath: Porter was released by the Steelers after the season in a money-saving move, then signed with the Dolphins.

15. Charles Barkley
The 411: On Dec. 31, 2008, TNT analyst and Basketball Hall of Famer Charles Barkley was pulled over in Scottsdale, Ariz., and arrested on suspicion of DUI.

The Apology: Barkley, on missing his television job: "I let so many people down. It just [stinks] watching the shows and not being there. I screwed this up."

The Aftermath: Barkley took a leave of absence from TNT to deal with his legal and personal issues and returned after the '09 All-Star Game and is working for a for-profit group to stamp out hunger $5 at a time.

The Yankees spent $120 million and all they got out of it was the golden slump-busting thong.14. Jason Giambi
The 411: A series of investigative reports by San Francisco Chronicle reporters Lance Williams and Mark Fainaru-Wada revealed, among other things, that Giambi testified before a grand jury that he took PEDs provided by Victor Conte and BALCO for three seasons.

The Apology: Although never actually admitting anything while addressing the media in 2005, Giambi said, "When I went into that grand jury, I told the truth," and "I know the fans might want more, but at this present time because of all the legal matters, I can't get into specifics." Giambi's benign tumor and parasite refused to comment.

The Aftermath: Giambi ultimately received the remaining $82 million on the $120 million, seven-year contract he signed with the Yankees in 2001 and was praised by Steinbrenner, who said, "It takes a hell of a big man to stand up and apologize."

13. Andy Pettitte
The 411: Pettitte's name also appeared in the Mitchell report (via trainer Brian McNamee's testimony) as an alleged user of human growth hormone. Pettitte admits to using HGH twice to recover from an elbow injury in 2002.

The Apology: Said Pettitte in 2007: "I felt an obligation to get back to my team as soon as possible. For this reason, and only this reason, for two days I tried human growth hormone. … This is it -- two days out of my life; two days out of my entire career, when I was injured and on the disabled list. I wasn't looking for an edge. I was looking to heal."

The Aftermath: Amid the admission and public skepticism of Pettitte's honesty, the pitcher signed a one-year, $16 million contract to remain with the Yankees.

12. Alex Rodriguez
The 411: Sports Illustrated writer Selena Roberts details Rodriguez's use of PEDs and a failed 2003 drug test in her book "A-Rod: The Many Lives of Alex Rodriguez." To get in front of the story, Rodriguez interviewed with ESPN's Peter Gammons and held a news conference at the Yankees' spring training facility.

The Apology: Rodriguez to Gammons: "It was such a loosey-goosey era. I'm guilty for a lot of things. I'm guilty for being negligent, naive, not asking all the right questions. And to be quite honest, I don't know exactly what substance I was guilty of using." His presser at spring training was attended by various Yankees players, including catcher Jorge Posada, who walked out halfway through.

The Aftermath: After recovering from hip surgery, Rodriguez led the Yankees to the 2009 World Series title and won the Babe Ruth Award as the New York chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America's postseason MVP. Upon receiving the trophy, an emotional Rodriguez asked, "What's next, the good guy award?" No, A-Rod, what's next is the death of karma.

11. Latrell Sprewell
The 411: During a practice in December 1997, Golden State Warriors guard Latrell Sprewell got into an argument with coach P.J. Carlesimo. The argument escalated to where Sprewell choked Carlesimo until teammates pulled him away.

The Apology: Eight days later in a news conference at an Oakland hotel, Sprewell offered this: ''I want to start by apologizing publicly to P.J. Carlesimo and [general manager Garry] St. Jean." Sprewell added, "I think there are several things that can be learned from this incident. For me, the one thing I've learned is that I have to do a better job of controlling my temper when I'm put in a situation where frustration mounts and you want to lose control."

The Aftermath: Sprewell was suspended for the remainder of the season, and the Warriors voided the remaining $24 million on his $32 million contract. Sprewell later signed a lucrative contract with the Knicks. In 2002, while making $16 million a year with the Timberwolves, Sprewell turned down a contract valued at $27 million from Minnesota, calling it an "insult" and reminding everyone that "I got my family to feed." In retrospect, it probably wasn't a shrewd move.

10. Wade Boggs
The 411: After Boggs ended a four-year extramarital affair with Margo Adams, his private thoughts on various teammates (Jim Rice "thinks he's white") and opponents were chronicled in Adams' 1988 interview with Penthouse magazine.

The Apology: Although Boggs apologized to teammates mentioned in the article, he refused to say anything else in a closed-door team meeting. Also, Boggs did what everyone who felt like crying did in the 1980s -- he appeared on "20/20" with Barbara Walters (aka the Original Oprah).

The Aftermath: This resulted in a rare double apology when pitcher Dennis "Oil Can" Boyd publicly said he was sorry for telling the media Boggs needed to seek professional help for being a sex addict.

9. Rex Ryan
The 411: While attending an MMA fight in Florida shortly before Super Bowl XLIV, Jets coach Rex Ryan responded to taunts by Dolphins fans by flipping them the middle finger, which was captured on a cell phone camera and shared extensively over the Internet.

The Apology: Before the incident, Ryan told the crowd in an interview, "I want to just tell everybody in Miami, hey, we're coming to beat you twice next year." A few days later, Ryan said the gesture "was stupid and inappropriate."

The Aftermath: Ryan was fined $50,000 by the Jets, but we suspect he earned respect of about 98 percent of the team's fans in the process. Oh, and the Jets probably will beat Miami twice next year.

8. George Hill
The 411: After the Spurs guard took nude pictures of himself and sent them to a girlfriend, the photos were leaked to the notorious blog "The Dirty."

The Apology: Hill apologized to just about everybody earlier this month, saying "I have matured and learned from this episode."

The Aftermath: Hill and the Spurs attempted to sue The Dirty to take the photos down, claiming the use violates the league's copyrights to all things representing the Spurs, but a lawyer for the blog refused, responding that "trademark law does not apply to criticism of celebrities making fools of themselves."

7. Grady Sizemore
The 411: Several seminude photos of the Indians outfielder were stolen from an e-mail account and sent out to various blogs in November 2009.

The Apology: While apologizing for the incident, Sizemore added, "It was meant for me and my girlfriend, and it just happened to work out the way it did."

The Aftermath: Only time will tell when the MLB season begins in April.

[+] EnlargeSam Forencich/Getty Images
Greg, everyone in the arena really appreciates you going with, you know, ... clothes.6. Greg Oden
The 411: Oden took several self-portrait nude photos with his cell phone camera and sent them to a girlfriend. After they broke up, she posted the pics on the Internet.

The Apology: Talking to 95.5 The Game in Portland, Oden apologized profusely, adding, "Those pictures were taken over a year and a half ago. I've definitely grown since then."

The Aftermath: Some jokes write themselves.

5. Joey Porter
The 411: In September 2006, two of Porter's dogs, a pit bull and a mastiff, escaped from his property and killed a miniature horse at a nearby farm.

The Apology: Porter released a statement saying, "I have reached out to the owners of the horse and will do whatever I can to help them get through this very unfortunate situation."

The Aftermath: Our dubious sources report that the dogs didn't actually intend to harm the horse, they only wanted to offend Kellen Winslow.

4. Roger Clemens
The 411: Amid allegations of steroid use from the 2007 Mitchell report, pitcher Roger Clemens was also accused of having an affair with country singer Mindy McCready -- allegedly beginning when she was 15 years old.

The Apology: Clemens denied ever using performance-enhancing drugs or bedding McCready at 15, but he did admit in 2008 to "mistakes in his personal life."

The Aftermath: Any alleged affairs are the least of Clemens' worries. He still might face federal perjury charges if he lied to Congress, and the defamation suit brought against him by former trainer Brian McNamee is still ongoing. He allegedly settled the civil suit brought by his third ear.

3. Rick Pitino
The 411: Louisville coach Rick Pitino admitted to an extramarital affair in 2003 with Karen Cunagin Sypher in his testimony to the FBI regarding Sypher's alleged $10 million attempted extortion of the coach. The tryst supposedly took place in a Kentucky restaurant after it had closed.

The Apology: Pitino apologized to the Louisville community and his immediate family, stating "I let them down with my indiscretion six years ago. And I'm sorry for that and I tell them that every day." Pitino's apology also mentioned how he came to the university "at a very difficult time," referring to the 9/11 tragedy.

The Aftermath: With the Cardinals out of the Top 25 this season, Pitino reportedly floated his name as a candidate to coach the Nets. He later denied it, with our dubious sources claiming that restaurants in New Jersey close too late for his liking.

2. Vince Coleman
The 411: While with the Mets in 1993, Vince Coleman threw an M-80 firecracker at fans waiting for player autographs outside Dodger Stadium. The powerful explosive injured three people, including a 2½-year-old girl.

The Apology: Addressing the media with his wife and children at his side, Coleman stated "I now realize that my actions on July 24 were very inappropriate." Coleman also took issue with being depicted as "an insensitive, non-caring athlete," adding, "nothing more can be further than the truth."

The Aftermath: Coleman was suspended for the remainder of the season by the Mets and traded to Kansas City in the offseason. He also received three years' probation for the incident and is currently paid not to be a public speaker.

1. John Calipari
The 411: In his rookie season coaching the Nets in 1997, Calipari took issue with the written criticism of Newark Star-Ledger writer Dan Garcia and confronted him in a parking lot, calling him a "Mexican idiot."

The Apology: Although Calipari claimed he was joking (even though multiple witnesses heard him shouting the slur across a parking lot), at the request of league and team officials, he read a statement saying, "In retrospect, I can understand how the remark could have been misinterpreted."

The Aftermath: Twenty games into the lockout-abbreviated 1999 season, the Nets (3-17 at the time) fired Calipari.

Tigers Woods Press Conferance

Fear, stress, joy, confidence and, finally, exhaustion.

That's what Tiger Woods exhibited at his first press conference, says Atlanta-based body language expert Patti Wood, author of Success Signals: Understanding Body Language, based on these moves:

• Taking off his hat and wiping his head with his elbow as he entered the room:
"Any signal like that is to get rid of bad feelings, bad thoughts or bad emotions. It was also defensive toward the journalists. He was afraid of what was going to happen."

• Tone of voice when he first spoke:
"His voice went very high which showed his enormous stress. His eyes were very wide, too, which shows stress."

• Shoulders rising when asked if he did steroids:
"It looks and sounds believable. He's answering very calmly. And, as he's saying it, his voice doesn't go up. But his shoulders and head come up straight. That's what people do when they feel positive and confident. He feels positive and confident when he says, 'He did not give me HGH.' "

• Taking a drink when asked about media coverage:
"Instead of savoring that sweet drink, he sticks his tongue out. He wanted to stick his tongue out at them, but it left a bad taste in his mouth. Then after the drink, he coughed and put his hand over his mouth. Which says it didn't go down well and he wanted to cough up how horrible it was."

• Smiling while talking about golf:
"It's the first time I've seen a real, true sparkle in his eye. That's all honest. That's all true. This is what really makes him joyful."

• Walking out of the room at the end:
"He's not running and he's not slouching. His body language is not defeated as he walks out of the room. He was done. He wasn't mad. He was, more than anything, a little bit tired."

Tiger's Apology Body Language Said It All

Shame, shame, shame! That was the theme of Tiger Woods' 14-minute press conference/mea culpa on Friday afternoon. While verbally, Woods' expressed how wrong, foolish and selfish he had been, Tiger's body language spoke to the immense shame and humiliation he felt while having to publicly admit his wrongdoing. According to body language experts we spoke with about the Friday fiasco, Tiger was absolutely truthful and repentant. What they said after the jump!

"The fact that Tiger was displaying non-verbal signs of shame only tells us he is humiliated by the disapproval of others, but not that he felt guilt about his actions before others knew about his behavior."

Martin Sheen, How Men Carry Babies

Celebrities with Their Dogs, What does the body language say?

Look at this link for my reads of celebrities wit their dogs. http://www.peoplepets.com/photos/celebrities/what-are-these-celebrities-saying-to-their-dogs/1

Wood has been reading the smiles and hand holds of celebrity couples for years, but she recently started seeing how her expertise works with humans and their dogs. She really loves Miley Cyrus's connection to her new pup Mate. "She's doing a cradle at the bottom and all the way across the body and up to the heart," Wood says. "She's not feeling the need to hold the dog tight for security ... She has joy with sharing her puppy."
KELLAN LUTZ, KEVIN & KOLAAccording to a recent survey by Pup-Peroni, 59 percent of dog owners said they have the same personalities as their pooches. Wood says that this certainly seems true for Kellan Lutz and his two rescues, Kevin and Kola. "If you look at the pet parent's energy, he's got that very confident powerful body language, and his dogs are matching and mirroring him with their tail position," she say
OPRAH, SUNNY & LAUREN"It looks like they all went to the same hairdresser!" Wood observes. It was a big day for the family — Oprah was introducing Sunny and Lauren to her audience! "I'm always looking to see if there's a preference for one or the other, but she's got the very same kind of hand hold and is pressing them to the same part of her body." The puppies, on the other hand? Wood says they were a bit sleepy!
DANIELLE JONAS & RILEY"This puppy really feels like Danielle is the mommy," Wood says of the way Riley is licking Danielle's face. "Her hand wrapped around the head, which is exactly what mommies do when they're nursing. She's very comfortable with that mommy position with her puppy."
AMANDA SEYFRIED & FINN"This is incredibly unique," she says. "You do not see this. Amanda has come down exactly on the level of her pet, with an extreme amount of effort to do that. She's in an unusual, almost yoga-like position in order to give a nurturing kiss to her dog — and her puppy loves it."

His dog has what are called 'airplane ears.' That's a very distinct posture, that's when they have conflicted emotional states," Wood says, but she also considers that Noah might have been thrown off by the paparazzi that day. "But the pet parent has that nice shift towards his dog. 'I'm here, everything's okay, I'm paying attention to you, we're connected.' He's there to protect his dog."
BRADLEY COOPER & CHARLOTTE "I love that he's come down on the level of his puppy," Wood says. Charlotte's head is down, but her legs are relaxed. "She's saying 'You're the king, you're my daddy.' He's so happy to see his puppy. 'It's about us. It's not about the photo.'"

How Can You Learn To Read Your Dog's Body Language? Meaning of Tail Wag.

How to understand what your dog is saying- Get a baseline for what is normal body language for your dog. If your dog is normally laid back and he suddenly goes bonzo crazy you know something is up. The research shows that 74 percent or Pup-peroni pet parents feel their dog’s body language let them know how their pet is feeling.
If you know what a person's normal responses are you can tell when something is wrong. Think about a Mom's trouble radar for her kids. The mom of a Teenager knows there is something up because she knows what her child's normal behavior looks and sounds like. If you want to know how to read your dogs tail notice it when your dog is calm. To know your dog wagging tail means he is anxious, excited or happy get a baseline. To figure out what tail movements show your dog is really happy an excited hold a treat in front of your dog and watch his tail. Tail wags have variations between breeds but for most dogs a happy tail is relaxed not tucked under and moves in a circular motion or wide wag. Most dogs tails go up high and stiff to show dominance and confidence and most tails lower and or curl under in submission.

What does a muzzel nuzzel or muzzel nudge by a dog mean?

What does a dog mean by a muzzle nuzzle? A nose nudge can mean “Notice Me", or "Can I have a treat.”
Origin of the dogs muzzle nudge – Puppies nudge their moms faces to get the food from her mouth.
I am like the more than a 1/3 of Pup-peroni surveyed pet parents who feel they have had an entire conversation without saying a word.
My dog Bo comes curls up on a pillow in my office all day. At 4:30 he comes and sits by my desk and looks up at me asking, "Can I have a snack before dinner Mom?" If I keep working till his dinner time at 5:00 he muzzle nudges my hands to say, “It’s dinner time now Mom.”
Your dog may nudge with his nose to be fed, to show affection to get attention.

You come through the door and shout “Sparky, I am home" and hear him bark lightly.

Obama's Nativity story, body language read of mothers freind.

Official Obama nativity story continues to unravel. Body language read of his mother's freind as she speaks of seeing him as a baby.

In a video that has been removed from the Internet since the 2008 presidential campaign, Susan Blake, a high school friend of Obama's mother, gave an interview in which she discussed seeing Dunham shortly after Barack Obama Jr.'s Aug. 4, 1961,
birth
here is the link to cut and paste to see the Youtube video of

The story of the diaper she has told many times, she is pulling from me memory, but that could be a created story memory rather than an actual event. Her head movement and eye-blink as she says "briefly" is very spontaneous and in the moment. That lets me know she rarely adds the word briefly. That she wants you to know all she has is the little story.
Her facial expressions and head movements are in sync, but they would be that way for a good story you have told many times as well.
Here is the tell. She did stumble over his name twice, watch that part of the tape. This actually makes me believe she is telling the truth as it appears she is switching back and forth from her memory as Barry the baby and The Barack Obama. As anyone would in real life if they are remembering a story and the name or relationship has changed.

How to read your dog's body language. Greeting Your Dog.

A nonverbal analysis of dog human interaction
Would you like to be able to read your dog’s body language? Would you like to communicate with your dog more effectively and know all the secrets of dogs greeting? Here is a dog body language test followed by the answers.
How many times have you had an entire conversation with your dog? We talk on and on thinking of course, that our dog understands every word we say.
There is so much communication that a dog can understand. How many of us feel we have had an entire “conversation” with our dogs without saying a word? I love the greeting dance when you come through the door to your dog at the end of the day. Here is a greeting between a Sparky the dog and you the pet parent. This is followed by a nonverbal, “bark, by wag" analysis of what you and Sparky are truly communicating.

You come through the door and shout “Sparky, I am home" and hear him bark two sharp short bark in high pitch.

Sparky comes running to you. His head held high, his mouth open his tongues hanging out.

You bend down and say, "I missed you so much.” and begin to pet him.

Sparky tail is wagging. The tail is down and relaxed and swinging broadly, but his hips don’t move!

“I missed you Sparky." "Did you miss me?” You say, as you scruff and pet Sparky.

Sparky brings his nose up to your face and sniffs you. He gives you muzzle nuzzle and licks your face.
What have you and your dog said in your greeting dance?

What do you think you are Sparky were saying?
Here is a nonverbal interpretation of the dog and pet parent interaction.

You come through the door and shout “Sparky, I am home" and hear him bark two sharp short bark in high pitch.
These are good barks, saying, “Hello, I see you!” two nice short barks is good, one high bark means, "You surprised me." (If it was one low bark it would mean “back off." If your dog gives a low barks with marked pauses in between, “This may be an intruder I am sending out a warning.”

Sparky comes running to you. His head held high, his mouth open his tongues hanging out. Head high is confident, but combined with open relaxed mouth with the tongue out it says, “I feel good, I am relaxed and happy to see you.” I didn’t meantion Sparkys ears in the test. They may be up and rotated forward in expectation then relax when he sees you.

You bend down and say, "I missed you so much.” and begin to pet him. It would be better if you actually crouched down on his level and let him come to you as bending down and going forward and reaching out can be seen as aggressive and or scary for some dogs. However, Sparky knows you are friendly as he responds to you nicely.

Sparky tail is wagging. The tail is down and relaxed and swinging broadly, but his hips don’t move! (Wags vary by bread and dog personality. You need to check your dog for his happy norm you can wave a treat at him and see what his tail does to know what his tail does in happy mode.)
Many dogs have a relaxed broadly swinging tail to show happiness. Some dogs have an “excited happy’ wag that differs from their relaxed or contented happy tail. They may make fast little circles wags with their tail. Laboratory research suggests that positive feeling make your dogs tail wag more to the right and negative feeling make it wag more towards the left. If Sparky's hips go down, he is showing he respects you. Low hips with a tail wag are a more submissive wag. That’s not bad. The dog is just letting you know you are in charge. Dogs with docked tails may swing their hips to communicate happiness or excitement.

“I missed you Sparky." "Did you miss me?” You say, as you scruff and pet Sparky.
You’re using his name in a positive emotional setting of greeting which makes him feel recognized and want to come when his name is called.

Sparky brings his nose up to your face and sniffs you. He gives you muzzle nuzzle and licks your face. Dogs, “see” with their noses, greet, and give a handshake by sniffing and the muzzle nudge can be an affectionate doggy hug. (It can also mean I need to go outside now! Muzzle nudges and face licking are behaviors that are a can be affection or a desire to be fed.

How many times have you had an entire conversation with your dog? We talk on and on thinking of course, that our dog understands every word we say.

There is so much communication that a dog can understand. How many of us feel we have had an entire “conversation” with our dogs without saying a word?
Here are tips for training dogs not to jump on guests or dogs that bark too much when guests come through the door.
The door is the mouth of the cave and your dog may feel the need to defend the house or be chief greeter and attack guests.
If you have a new puppy or you are training your dog not to jump, wait to fully acknowledge and pet him until you are a few feet from the door at your “greeting station.” If he is a jumper and you can stand not loving on him, wait until he sits to pet him. Reward him for what you consider good behavior and ignore him if he is doing something you consider wrong. When your dog behaves immediately give him rewards be it praise, treats, scuffing or good belly rub. For some being, good means your dog stays down and doesn’t bark in a way that might scare guests so when though I say his name and my voice lovingly greets him once I enter the house I wait till he sits to touch him. However, as soon as his little rear hits the floor he gets, “Good Boy” praising. Then I come down to his level and he gets lots of scruffing and pets, and he comes in to sniff, and muzzle nudge. Goodness, I love the greeting dance.

Finger Pointing, Obama.

What does finger pointing mean? I just got a call from Salon.com. The journalist was interested in knowing what Obama's finger pointing meant. Obama is a masterful speaker and often plans open handed finger pointing in his speeches to emphasize his strong feeling about a particular issue. It is most interesting to me when he uses it in response to a tough question, as then it shows his desire to "shoot" the questioner.
Here is an excerpt from my book on the topic.

Here is an excerpt from my book success signals. I would love a link to the article.
Pointing
One of the first things most of us learned about body language is it’s not polite to point. Why? Pointing is a potent gesture of power, a symbolic weapon. When you make a fist and thrust your finger out you’re symbolically shooting someone. It’s threatening.
When Bill Clinton turned to the nation, pointing his finger and said, “I never had sex with that woman,” he was lying. This is often the case, especially during testimony in front of congressional committees. So, does pointing a finger mean you are lying? Absolutely not. The average Joe would never do that. In fact, when I teach law enforcement, I say pointing can be a sign that someone’s telling the truth because they are passionately defending themselves. I see pointing used by powerful men who are used to getting their way and who have lied successfully in the past. They use it when they are cornered to defend themselves by counterattack. Speakers use a different version of pointing to show conviction of thought.

When is a dog's wagging tail not a happy sign?

When is a dog's wagging tail not a happy sign?

Tails and their wags just like a human mouth and smile can show a range of moods from happy to anxious. Broad tail wags combined with a relaxed muzzle and lips show friendliness. A fast tight tail wag with rear end down of the dog down shows anxiety. When a dog is laying on his back he is not always signally scratch my belly.
Just like kid giggling kid in a tickle fight yells “uncle!
you win”, when your puppy lays on their back with their tummy exposed and gives a fast little wag, your dog is saying "I am submissive." "You win."

In most breeds, when a dog is walking and holds his tail high he is showing dominance. Some research on dog body language even shows wag side difference's for different emotions. When your dog is really happy the tail goes more to the right and if your dog is fearful and anxious the tail wags more to the left. Do a baseline test for your dog to see if you see a wag difference. It is really interesting to me as a body language expert because a dogs tail shows emotions in a similar way that a humans gestures show emotions and people have a right side left side preference. Fear and anxiety more to the left. To read more about about right hand bad left hand good gesturing type in Gestures on this blog.

Why Do Dogs Mirror Human Body Language?

Why do dogs mirror our body language. Just like humans match and mirror people they like and are comfortable with dogs mirror human body language when they like their human and feel comfortable.
In a national survey of over 1,100 pet parents, almost half (41 percent)of pet parents surveyed said that their furry friend is more likely to “notice” they’ve had a bad day than their best human friend.
Just like humans match and mirrorwhat you do shows they understand, dogs take on our behavior to show they understand. Dogs are the only species that actually follow the lead of another speicies. Dogs are the only species that match and mirror a different species. They follow us to show their understanding and love.

More on Should You Make Eye-Contact With Your Dog?

Humans naturally make eye contact to show affiliation affection and agreement. I love to look at my dog Bo. By looking at your dog in safe and comfortable times you can train your dog that gently loving brief eye contact from you has a new meaning. It means, "I love you."
Dogs are unusually sensitive to human body language. When you do make eye-contact, a dog may still avert his gaze. Just remember it is not a lack of love and caring he is just showing you that he sees you as the alpha pet parent. Don’t take it personally as a signal, they don’t love you.

When we go to bed at night, I give my dog Bo a treat from the treat jar in the Master Bedroom. Bo will look at me and I look at him in this little love dance as he waits for his treat. Once in bed, Bo is invited up for another treat. If I look at him to long as I say goodnight he will avert his gaze. If I wasn't familiar with dog behavior I know I would think, “Bo doesn’t’ love me.” Now I know, that when he looks away, he is just telling me he knows I am in charge and he can be the baby dog. And he can happily curl up close at foot of the bed

Should You Make Eye Contact With Your Dog?

Should You Make Eye Contact With Your Dog?

Humans naturally make eye contact with other humans to show affiliation, affection and agreement. In dog-human interaction, eye contact is not always so positive. Making eye contact with your dog can cause problems. You may wish to send a positive message but your dog may not "see" it that way. In domesticated dogs, so much of their behavior depends on the dog’s breed, or their personality as well as the relationship they have with you. Most dog behaviorist will tell you that dogs don't like lingering eye contact. In fact, dogs often view direct head on lingering bold stares as a threat. When a dog meets another dog who stares the dog interprets the doggie body language as, "I challenge you to a duel.”
Starring at your dog too long, even if you are looking with love, can be interpreted by the dog as, "I starring a you dog because I am a threat."

Is just looking at your dog a lot OK? It depends on your relationship. Because I read so many photos of dogs with their humans I have noticed that their our some dogs that respond warmly to a look from their pet parent. As a pet parent myself I know that we can a loving look with our special pooches. How your feel when you look is important. When dogs are stressed they look at the pack leader for instructions on how to proceed. If you look at your dog too much when you are uncomfortable or stressed and or you are not feeling "in charge" your dog can interpret your stress cues and think your eye contact indicates a need for assistance, "What should I do next top dog."“I am looking at you because you are the leader and I am your subordinate human." and if you do it frequently your dog can get a big head thinking all your checking in means he is in charge and he can u can do whatever he wants.
Taking the lead and making correct eye contact with your dog is critical when entering and leaving through doors wit your dog. When you are going through a door you should take the lead and look toward the door, not at the dog, so it is clear you are leading the way. If you look at the dog the dog then the door your dog may think he is supposed to take the lead.

In dog a world, followers watch and make eye contact.

Remember a dog can interpret your eye contact with them as a sign of submission. “Oh, my human is looking at me." "My human needs my help, so I must be the alpha dog around here.” Some animal behaviorist think giving your dog too much eye contact can make your dog loose respect for you and the dog may “act out” like a teenager who disrespects their parents or substitute teacher. You may be familiar with dog TV shows like “It’s Me or the Dog.” In that show, dogs are often holding their families hostage to their whims. Again, if you look at a dog too much when you are stressed or to please the dog, the dog thinks he is in charge and can do whatever he wants.
From a human body language perspective, you may be able to think about it this way, powerful people don't need to make eye contact and watch. They just move forward. They know they are doing the right thing.
Dogs can interpret human eye contact as signaling, “I am looking at you because I need you to be the leader, I can’t take care of you.” If you have a dog that is not an alpha leader too much human eye contact can be stressful. Dogs don’t really want to be in charge. Dogs want their pet parent to take care of them. If a dog thinks, you need him to check for danger, lead the way and all those other Parent jobs it makes them uncomfortable. Take charge. It is the way to be nice to your dog.Stress is very contagious. Your stress effects them and make their lives more stressful and ultimately is communicated t you through their aggressiveness or whining and your life gets more stressed.

There are some kinds of human eye contact that mimics this power dance of “Who is in charge who is the follower.”. In human conversations, create an eye dance. The listener make more eye contact than the speaker and the lower status person be it a subordinate listening to his boss, a good child listening to a parent or a women listening to a man will make more eye contact, as they check in to know what to do than the speaker. In human conversation, that role can shift back and forth in a conversation. In dog-human interactions, dogs learn the role and may keep playing it out.
