I remember when I was a kid in the 70's and John Travolta came walking down the street at the beginning of the movie carrying two paint cans, and wearing his shirt unbuttoned half way down his chest. Unbuttoned or Plunging, 'Heavage' Is Back; No '70s Hair Carpets, Please, Wisps .By RAY A. SMITH
Man cleavage -- plunging necklines slit open to reveal chest hair, pectoral muscles, maybe more -- is back.
Until recently, male décolletage was an androgynous fashion affectation limited mainly to sporadic appearances on European runways. But the look, including deep V-necks and scoop-neck tops, hit the U.S. in full force at New York's September Fashion Week, turning up at shows by Duckie Brown, Michael Bastian and Yigal Azrouël.

If the fall runway shows were any indication, men's necklines are taking a plunge. WSJ's Ray Smith lets you know how far to go, and weighs in on the issue of chest hair.
.This time around, the styles were more blatantly sexual and the models had a more studly swagger. New York designer Mr. Bastian said his show's vibe was inspired in part by "Latin guys" he noticed wearing their shirts unbuttoned, as well as the unabashed machismo of Latin American men in general. "We wanted to go back to a more natural body, a more '70s body with the models, getting away from the super skinny," says Mr. Bastian.

.Plenty of men, from regular Joes to "Dancing With the Stars" contestants, have loosened to the trend.
On HBO's hit series "True Blood," 29-year-old ex-model Mehcad Brooks rarely went an episode without removing his shirt. Mr. Brooks also frequently displays his perfect pecs off-screen, wearing rib-hugging T's with deep V-necks or shirts with the top buttons suggestively undone.
"Even if people were making fun of me, calling me 'Miami Vice' like they used to in college, I would still wear it," says the 6-foot-4, 215-pound actor. "It feels comfortable and I like the way it looks. If you can pull off three buttons undone, then do it."
Other fans of the look include actors Jude Law and Ed Westwick, who've been snapped showing off their man cleavage -- or "heavage," as one style writer dubbed it.
"Harper's Bazaar's Stephen Gan is working the new male cleavage in a low-cut T-shirt; it's called 'heavage,'" tweeted Hilary Alexander, fashion director of Britain's Daily Telegraph newspaper, in early October while at a runway show in Paris.
Mr. Gan, who, aptly enough, is also the editor of a magazine called "V," says, "I think I'm allowed to dress this way."

John Travolta in 'Saturday Night Fever'
..Vik Mohindra, a 27-year-old graduate student from Toronto, confesses that his guy friends sometimes tease him about his heavage. "I would not recommend it to someone who isn't confident with their body and overall sense of style," says Mr. Mohindra, who says he works out three to four days a week and has a "defined" chest.
Male cleavage, particularly on the silver screen, has long played a prominent role in popular culture. Douglas Fairbanks Sr. had his chest on display throughout the 1920s in films like 1924's "The Thief of Bagdad" and "The Iron Mask" in 1929. A dashing Errol Flynn showed man cleavage in the 1930s, most memorably in 1938's "The Adventures of Robin Hood." These actors made skin-flashing practically de rigueur for certain swashbuckling roles.
The aesthetic continued well into the 1950s and the 1960s, says menswear historian Robert Bryan, author of the new book "American Fashion Menswear." Among those celebrated for their heavage were Marlon Brando (in the 1951 film version of "A Streetcar Named Desire") and Sean Connery as James Bond in the 1960s.
The last time man cleavage was so prevalent in the U.S. was in the 1970s -- "the golden age of male chest hair," says Mr. Bryan. Epitomized by John Travolta in 1977's "Saturday Night Fever," the convention back then was to skip enough shirt buttons to show off a thick forest of hair, perhaps topped with a gold medallion as a sign of virility.
After decades in the fashion equivalent of Siberia, man cleavage got a boost in the early 1990s when Tom Ford, then head designer and creative director for Gucci, climbed to the top of fashion's ranks while often wearing a dress shirt unbuttoned practically to his navel.
It still took years for the fad to go more mainstream. Helping to pave the way were magazines like Men's Journal and Men's Health, which objectified the male torso on their covers. Marketers such as Abercrombie & Fitch attracted droves of fans with their buff, waxed male models. For those who don't have the goods naturally, cosmetic surgery offers an increasingly popular solution. The American Society of Plastic Surgeons reports that pectoral implants more than tripled in 2008, to 1,335 procedures up from 440 in 2007.
.Brad Wieners, editor-in-chief of Men's Journal magazine, believes that the magazine has made guys feel more comfortable about wearing more fitted clothes and styles that show that they work out. Mr. Wieners notes that for a recent cover shoot, actor Alec Baldwin donned a shirt open at the collar, subtly revealing chest hair. "He's not Burt Reynolds," says the editor. "But he's letting you know he's got a chest."
The latest resurrection of man cleavage does raise a not-so insignificant issue: to wax or not? For a number of years, any male chest hair was considered a fashion don't, but very recently a thin thatch has become quite acceptable. The low-cut look "is better if you have a little chest hair," says Tyler Thoreson, a New York-based men's style consultant. "It's not about showing off chest hair, it's about it peeking out a little bit."
Robert Caponi, a 32-year-old musician in Greensboro, N.C., isn't taking any chances. In order to get the hair-to-skin ratio just right, he shaves his chest every two weeks or so -- a regimen that helps him to feel comfortable in one of the six deep V-neck shirts he owns. Not all styles fit the bill. After purchasing a wide scoop neck recently, he declared it simply too revealing. "I looked in the mirror and I was disgusted," he says.
Some women share the sentiment. Posting on her blog earlier this year, Ketty Colom, a 22-year-old college student in Orlando, Fla., vented about the burst of men sporting heavage. "Leave it to the bedroom," she said. "I don't want to see your chest."

How Dogs View Human Eye Contact. How Can You Tell If Your Dog is Giving You Soft Eyes.
In this photo, the pet parent is giving her dog human loving attention. When you and your dog are relaxed, bonding and connecting your can look loving and briefly like the pet parent in this photo.
It is obvious by the upward tilt of the dogs head and the raised nose and his “soft eyes” that he dog has learned that his pet parents eye contact and head hold mean, "Mommy loves me. " I hope that he got this loving interaction after he has did something good, like brought her a toy, made his bed washed the dishes!
Pay attention to your dog when he is good. Your dog loves to get your attention. Just like a human child, your dog will do things to be noticed. Here is what is important. He will do something and then watch your body language to see how you respond.
If you notice him and make eye contact when he is doing something bad, chewing a slipper, getting on the sofa, then guess what he may do that very same thing. Your look, your attention is rewarding. Read the post on dog’s interpretation of eye contact to learn all the different interpretation your dog can have from your look.
“Soft eyes” The dogs eyes are partially closed sometimes squinty. You really have t look the whole dog to see if a dog has “soft eyes” Look at the dog’s posture, facial expression and eye position to make sure the dog is relaxed and non-threatening. Softness can be read in a slight squint, the rest of the facial features relaxed, the lips long and the commeasure back and the ears neutral (neutral is different for different dogs but one tell for softness is that the ears are not back pressed against the head or spread out and tense like antenna.

Dog and Human Body Language. Do Dogs Like it When You Hug Them?
If you can view this sideways photo, you will find me on the floor with m dog Bo. It was taken of us several years ago when Bo was one of two. This photo really shows how much I love my dog. I love him so much I have my one arm wrapped around his neck and may I am holding his hindquarters with my other hand and arm. I also have my head tilted towards him in love and my heart is pressed up against him. Bo is cradling up against me. However, I notice his tail is down. He is big frightened of the photographer and the flashes from the camera. His body is toward me and his head is relaxed into me so it is clear he is seeking comfort from me and is not trying to get away. However, reading my dog's body language, I bet the combination of a too human like hug that to a dog feels too confining and the big ole camera and crowd in my kitchen is not helping. Dogs don't typically like to be hugged. I know, if you have a wonderful dog like my dog Bo you really want to hug on him. Don’t take it personally, if your dog tries to escape your loving embrace. Most dogs don’t like the restriction as it keeps them from “fleeing” mode that is a dogs normal response to stress. Think about it in human terms. You wouldn’t like it if someone came a held your feet when you were stressed, would you? I am a big hugger and I am so blessed that over the years Bo has not only adapted to my hugs but seeks them. Most dogs don’t mind a pat or a very brief full hug but you need to know your dog and watch them closely to understand if they are hug tolerant. Dogs can fear or love hugs.
I enjoy watching TV shows that play videos of kids and babies and dogs. It is cute when dogs allow babies and kids to hug them. However, there is that part of me that wants to teach everyone you don't hug dogs you don’t know. Hugs are not the accepted greeting ritual. Instead, approach strange dogs by putting out your hand so they can sniff it. If the dog feels safe and friendly he will let you know by staying in place to say, “Your OK!” but not freezing in place in fear which says in dog body language, “I am too scared to move.” In another show of the acceptance may be presenting the side of his body to say, “I won’t be aggressive by coming at you head on I will give you my side so you can pet me now.”

Martin Sheen, How Men Carry Babies
Look at the way Martin Sheen carries his baby. I think it is so fun how often men carry babies like a sack of groceries. I have been reading photos of celebrities with their dogs for the campaign I am doing for Pup-peroni. I have a few photos where the guys carry their dogs in the same way, just like a bag or groceries. Here Martin does have his child a bit more on his hip, that is one of the ways women carry children, which makes good use of women's larger hips.

How Dogs Comfort Us. A Story of dog body language
Years ago I broke my wrist and my dog Bo was so wonderfully comforting.
I was walking around for six weeks with my wrist in cast and and my arm in a sling. Bo was really worried about me. I knew he was reading my body language and he could tell I was in pain. Each and every time I would sit down on the couch Bo would come up and lie down across my feet saying nonverbally, "I don't want you to hurt youself again" and "Rest Mommy you are moving to much and working to hard." It was so comforting. In those first few weeks when I was in such pain it meant so much. He also did another body langauge gesture that he had never done before. When I was in pain streached out on the couch or in bed Bo would take his body and lay across my legs so there was no way I could get up without asking his to move and he would look at me and check on me occasionally to make sure I was ok. It was so sweet.

Muzzel Nudge, Dog Body Language.
Muzzle Nudge. A dog gives a muzzle nudge by taking his nose and nudging the face of their pet owner. They do this in greeting and or to show friendliness, I prefer to friendly rather than submissive. Think of the dog using his nose the way a human child may come up and use his hand to touch his mom to say. "Hi there, could I have your attention."
Alternatively, dogs use the muzzle nudge to say, “I’m hungry” Bo the wonder dog does a muzzle nudge to be fed and muzzle nudges my hand to ask me to pet him. If I stop, petting and Bo want more he lets me know. Bo nudges me again, sometimes going a step further and actually placing his nose under my palm and tossing the palm up towards his head or back to let me know where he thinks my hand should be.

The "play bow" is dog body language for "Wanna Play?"
Play Bow. Dogs love to play and they have a wonderful way of asking others if they would like to play called a "play bow." How do Animal Behaviorists describe a "play bow?” When a dog once to play with another dog or a human he approached then bows down to the other dog or human with the front half of his body. (Dogs typically approach new dogs at their sides rather than head on so, if they bow head on to another dog or to a human the bow makes the approach nonaggressive.)
In a play bow, a dog stretches out the front of his body and his front leg go out and forward and flat to the ground, typically up to the dogs “elbows” Lowering the front of his body shows is a submissive gesture. Videos of The Bachelor Jake and Vienna's body lanuage in their TV interviews and recent photos.
The bachelor, Jake Pavelka, and his fiancee Vienna, insights on their body language - Are they in love? Recent photos show them kissing for the cameras but I notice that she often hold her head up without the typical head tilt and forward face of a women that has just been proposed to. She may be worried about messing up her hair and makeup, but I would like to see both their faces reach out and press together. Look at their lower torso when they kiss. They stay separated.
What exactly do you see from their behavior? Well I see Jake hold her face in one photo to try to get her closer and I notice his finger in the photos where she is wearing a white coat oddly gripping her with just the tips of his fingers. (the showing the ring shot and the one kiss. That is not a grip of love or passion that is a grip to be holding her for the photo. She is all about that ring in the one photos and on Kimmel. But notice in the photo how she holds the hand forward to the cameras and not toward him to include him in. What exactly do you see from their behavior? Well I see Jake hold her face in one photo to try to get her closer and I notice his finger in the photos where she is wearing a white coat oddly gripping her with just the tips of his fingers. (the showing the ring shot and the one kiss. That is not a grip of love or passion that is a grip to be holding her for the photo. She is all about that ring in the one photos and on Kimmel. But notice in the photo how she holds the hand forward to the cameras and not toward him to include him in. The New Short Shorts
I looked at a fashion magazine last week. Yes once or twice a year I splurge on a fashion magazine. It is a reward for a week of intense 12 hours days of speaking and writing.
I noticed that super short shorts the flow out like a skirt are the new look.
They show them with suit jackets. Yep, I can just see my next audiences response to me in the new look! I would make a great first impression. Me in those gladiator high heeled sandles that for some reason are still in style and the new short shorts and a jacket. Crazy. Of course if I were 15 it would look amazing!

Dog and Human Greeting Behavior
How do dogs greet humans and is it the same or different from how they greet other dogs?
I have been fascinated with greeting behavior and nonverbal communication since I took my first body language class in college. I was so excited when I was asked to be the spokesperson for Pup-Peroni and talk about human body language as people interact with their dogs I was so excited. So many aspects of human greeting behavior and dog-greeting behavior are similar.
In this post your will learn some of the engaging behaviors that dogs use as they meet and greet other dogs and humans.
When a dog seeks attention or affection and joins humans and or dogs for interaction, he does several things that are similar to human body language. Dog behaviorist call these bids for attention and affection acting in an “affliative” manner.
Just like humans who get closer to each other to greet dogs also decrease distance with various behaviors. One of the most obvious things that dogs can do to decrease the distance is bring their ears and or nose forward. Remember, a dog’s sense of smell is extremely acute and better than their sense of vision. A dog my bring his may bring his nose forward to smell you. The smell is like a human handshake for dog. He reaches out his nose to check you out, just like you shake someone’s hand or give a high five to check out a stranger. Dog's may also put up a paw in what looks like a human handshake. It's a natural behavior to show submission. My dog Bo only took one lesson and several Pup-Peroni treats to "learn" how to shake hands with me.
A dog that is feeling affectionate or seeks warm attention may give you a muzzle nudge or muzzle nuzzle. In a muzzle nudge, a dog may bring his nose up to nudge your face, your hand or your leg. I think of it as a doggie hug that is warmer than a doggie handshake sniff.
The muzzles nudge or muzzles nuzzle stems from redirected behavior from a dog's puppyhood feeding rituals in the wild. Many dog behaviorist consider genetically the muzzle nudge genetically encoded. Wolves and other wild canine mothers hunt for food and bring it back the puppies chewed up inside their mouths. Puppies nudge their dog mom’s mouth and nose to get their mom to give them this food. It reminds me of kids bugging their mom for treats

Simalarities Between a Human’s Confident Powerful Body Language and a Dog’s Confident Powerful Dog Behavior
There are similarities between a human’s confident powerful body language and a dog’s confident powerful dog behavior. I am a body language expert and currently the national spokesperson for Pup-Peroni dog treats. As part of the campaign, I am examining dog human interaction. There are some beautiful similarities between dog behavior and human body language and at times a new language created as dog and their pet parents work to understand and be understood.
In my body language programs, my business audience members learn that confidence and power are communicated by: Space, Openness and Relaxation
Dogs in turn communicate confidence by how they use space openness and relaxation.
When you want to show that you feel powerful you;
1. Expand your body up and out Head high Chest up
2. Keep your body windows, windows such as the eyes, mouth relaxed or heart,
palms of your hands.
3. Relax your stance and your body’s limbs and face so nothing is overly
tight or tense.
A dog shows his confidence and openness’s to interact by standing his
1. Head high, Ears up.
2. Mouth open
3. Posture relaxed, loose legs stance, weight flat on his paws.
The tail is more complex. Read your dogs “resting tail” to find out his normal is.
Typically a dog's
• Friendly tail is relaxed and down
• Confident tail goes straight out
• Dominant is up and tense
• Insecure fearful tail is low tense curled tight to the body or under.
Again reading the meaning in your dogs tail is important to understand your dogs emotional state. You need to read your dog’s normal resting pose to find his norm. Though there are breed exceptions, typically a higher tail indicates a dominant attitude and low tense tail curl under communicates insecurity and fear. Typically, a friendly tail is relaxed.

The Bachlor, Jake, Vienna and Tenley
The Bachlor Here are my notes.
When They play back a scene of Jake kissing Kinley at the beginning of the show parts of his face and body are holding back. He rests his hands on her shoulders with his fingers spread out rather than pulling her close.
Compare this to the first kiss they play back with Vienna that shows great physical chemistry from his hold her head close to him with the fingers interlocked.
As he comes in at the beginning of the show he show up body language his shoulders are back he is tense and on and happy all at the same time.
When he says that there being there, "...is absolutely everything to me he shakes his head no." a contradiction between his body language and his words that indicates there may feel some tension about their viewing his choices.
His hug to his mother was wonderful he bent down to her and held onto her really fiving of himself. This helps us see what he is like when he is not "on." How he truly connects and shows love.
When Jake's Mom says she is concerned about Vinea? "Is she the girl that didn't get along? at the beginning of the show he presses his lips together tightly. To suppress how much he negative statement affects him. His full body language response shows really cares about Vienna, not just what his mother says about her.
I thought it was odd that he didn't go to get Tinely, there was so much pressure on her and he didn't ease that tension by bringing her into the room to meet his family and didn't tell her they would ALL be there. As he greets Tinely he gets up and pulls his shirt down, he is concerned about how he looks, he wants to look right, and he smiles but there is a tension there. His voice goes up and tense even though he is smiling the smile is tense.
Mother is so warm and real her voice and body language are in sync she is authentic as his dad with his head tilts, soft emotional voice and warm eyes and he talks with this son and later with Tinely a truly warm and caring man.
814 When Jake is asked Is she the girl you would pick> He says I can't answer that questions and his eyes close in an "eye block" his mouth turns down and he says he can't answer that question and he shakes his head no.
815 Jake Tenses up as he kisses her pursing his lips rather than melding into her.
820 Viena When he greets her on the bench I see his body fully relaxed for the first time on this episode. He lets his body spread out and sink in as he sits with her. He is not "on"
Mother and father and entire family tenses up in Vinea presence.
824 But if you look at Jake and Viena he body is relaxes he legs are open he is leaning into towards his arm is up on the couch relaxed there, but symbolically up and around her protecting her.
Lindseys mouth tenses as she talks about Viena
825 sister in law glares with dislike at Viena-- very strong dislike.

As he talks to his mom about Viena look at this arms in front of his body with his fingers interlaced a castle wall as his mother says negative things There is one moment in response that his face got so sad when she said something negative He mouth pulled down so significantly and he furrowed his brow. He was truly sad.
As Larua and lIndsey talk to her they mirror blocking signals. Legs crossed hands wrapped around their kness.
836- Jake is leaning in to her so connected and relaxed.
848 kisses Viena. Paassionate pressing his lips, then just smashing his face and lips into her malign into her.
They are tentative in the mud , Like how in the scene after that Viena gently puts water on him and gently cleans him. Her first real tender moment with him.
Also love Viena voice and body language and words in sync and warm as she says she is "Head over heals, crazy in love with him."
With Tinley on the Boat as he talks about the emotional connection vs. physical connection it is clear from her body language that she knows he is rejecting her. She purses her lips in distaste at his comments she puts her finger in front of her mouth, She rubs the side of her face.
His look of tension as he is talking is evident. Look at his body. There is enormous tension is his neck as he sits as if he is relaxed but his head is pulled back he mouth is tense look at the corners going down . It is not the sun in his eyes he is pulling away from her.
In bed with Tinley This kiss he is acting the kiss but look at his body it is not turned toward her and she is blocking his lower body from getting too close to her with her knee.
When the Jewelry gentleman asks Jake if he has chosen the girl Jake gives him a fake perplexed look and says not. And the name of Jewelry man gives his a tongue thrust showing his dislike and displeasure at Jake for saying that.
Just watched the last two scenes. He really put these girls through it. I really didn’t like how he proposed to Vienna. Why give her the first ring and talk about it symbolizing pain. He got far too much pleasure with “acting” as if he was going to reject her. You could see her sadness. And he just kept going. He didn’t reach out to comfort her. That is not natural for a man that is truly in love and cares for someone. There should be nonverbal indications to her that this is playacting. He didn’t show pain or real tension as pretended to reject her. I didn’t like that.
Also during the proposal he says he loves her but his voice goes high and tense. It could be “proposal tension in his voice, it could be all the cameras, But I would have liked to heard his voice go true rich low and deep. He rushed it. He didn’t keep looking to her to see how she would answer. It was so much about the show.
I did love how Vienna’s body bobbed up and down after the proposal and her acceptance she was really happy, bouncing up and down like a happy little girl.

His look of tension as he is talking is evident. Look at his body. There is enormous tension is his neck as he sits as if he is relaxed but his head is pulled back he mouth is tense look at the corners going down . It is not the sun in his eyes he is pulling away from her.
In bed with Tinley This kiss he is acting the kiss but look at his body it is not turned toward her and she is blocking his lower body from getting too close to her with her knee.
When the Jewelry gentleman asks Jake if he has chosen the girl Jake gives him a fake perplexed look and says not. And the name of Jewelry man gives his a tongue thrust showing his dislike and displeasure at Jake for saying that.
Just watched the last two scenes. He really put these girls through it. I really didn’t like how he proposed to Vienna. Why give her the first ring and talk about it symbolizing pain. He got far too much pleasure with “acting” as if he was going to reject her. You could see her sadness. And he just kept going. He didn’t reach out to comfort her. That is not natural for a man that is truly in love and cares for someone. There should be nonverbal indications to her that this is playacting. He didn’t show pain or real tension as pretended to reject her. I didn’t like that.
Also during the proposal he says he loves her but his voice goes high and tense. It could be “proposal tension in his voice, it could be all the cameras, But I would have liked to heard his voice go true rich low and deep. He rushed it. He didn’t keep looking to her to see how she would answer. It was so much about the show.
I did love how Vienna’s body bobbed up and down after the proposal and her acceptance she was really happy, bouncing up and down like a happy little girl.

One commentator – without apparent irony – said it was the most eagerly anticipated handshake in history. That may have been a little overblown, but in the world of sport and its attendant soap opera, all eyes were on Stamford Bridge yesterday. The usually perfunctory pre-match greeting ritual overshadowed the football as fans waited to see whether the Manchester City defender Wayne Bridge would stick with tradition and shake hands with Chelsea's captain, John Terry.
It was the first time the former team-mates had met since allegations surfaced that Terry had had an affair with Vanessa Perroncel, Bridge's ex-girlfriend and mother of his son.
The bookmakers Coral suspended bets on a possible handshake at 9.30am yesterday after a surge of wagers that the players would not shake. The pair had previously been odds-on to touch palms. William Hill said the non-shake would cost the company "a five-figure sum".
Bridge shook hands with the rest of the Chelsea players before kick-off but rejected Terry's proffered salutation. Terry, for his part, did not look him in the eye. Bridge's public snub of the sacked England captain came after his decision 48 hours earlier to rule himself out of the country's summer World Cup campaign, which would have involved playing alongside Terry. Bridge had the double satisfaction of being part of his side's shock 4-2 defeat of Chelsea.
Body language experts say the true origins of the handshake are lost in the passage of time. The gesture is taken as a sign of peace between warriors – to show that they were not carrying weapons.
Handshakes take on even greater significance on the world's political stage (see panel, below). President Bill Clinton famously brokered a handshake between the Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat and Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin in 1993. It was seen as highly symbolic and prompted hopes for a huge step forward in the Middle East peace process.
Patti Wood, an expert on human interaction, said Bridge's refusal to accept Terry's outstretched hand denied both the "hand of friendship" and the "greater ritual of the game". She explained: "In a game situation, the handshake says 'this is a game, and when we shake hands again we're going to be friends again'. So in this case, if you have somebody that you're competing with and you refuse to shake hands, you're symbolically saying: 'This is real. I'm going to really hurt you; we're not going to be friends afterwards'."
Ms Wood said snubbing a handshake was also "a way of saying 'I'm superior'. For instance, Donald Trump refuses to shake hands – he says because of germs, but there's also a power issue there. "If I'm doing a deal with you and I don't shake hands, you're below me."
Bridge's team were on the receiving end of the last high-profile handshake snub last December. The team's then manager Mark Hughes, having triumphed 3-0 over Arsenal, saw a fuming Arsène Wenger rebuff his gesture of sportsmanship. Hughes claimed Wenger "should be a little more gracious".
However, a survey last month revealed that the typically British handshake is going out of fashion, with youngsters preferring showbiz air kisses or fist bumps. Only 45 per cent of under 25s now use a handshake when they greet one another, compared to 69 per cent of those over the age of 25. A poll of 1,000 people found 74 per cent of adults shake hands less than they used to.

What does refusing a handshake mean?
I got a call yesterday from the UK publication The Independent on Sunday. The reporter shared that one famous soccer player had refused to shake hands with another. The soccer players involved are John Terry and Wayne Bridge.
LONDON, Feb 27 (Reuters) - Wayne Bridge refused to shake the hand of former team mate John Terry during the pre-match greeting between opposing teams before Manchester City’s Premier League match kicked off at Chelsea on Saturday.
Bridge, who has made himself unavailable to be selected for England rather than be in the same squad as Terry, ignored the Chelsea defender as the Manchester City players walked down the line of home players.
The two men have been the centre of newspapers headlines for weeks following allegations that Terry, his former close friend, had an extra-marital affair with Bridge’s former girlfriend.

First Impression, What you do makes a differance.
What does your first impression say about you?
Clients come to me to improve their first impression and create more effective first encounters. Sometimes people are uncomfortable and they develop little nonverbal behaviors that effect their first impression and once they become aware of those habits and there effect magic happens.
A year ago I was working with a coaching client on her first impression. My client is happily married and in her 50's she wants to feel more comfortable interacting with strangers. She had noticed that when she was out with a particular girlfriend that strangers approached her girlfriend before her and would stand facing toward her friend and engage with her friend before her. She wanted full unedited feedback from me about her first impression. The first thing I shared with her was how her very silhouette could be off putting. She is very attractive but because she has very broad shoulders and a broad upper chest while the rest of her torso comes in it creates a v silhouette. You have heard me speak about how silhouette's are read by on of the brains in the eye. That silhouette looks like a big man. Just viewing that silhouette can activate the danger response and make people less likely to approach and more likely to be on guard if they do interact.
Then we looked at her head. As she stands and sits her head juts forward slightly.A head just can show intent listening or vocal emphasis depending on the timing but if you jut it forward as you approach and hold it there with out other body language cues or facial cues to soften it it can make you look aggressive. My client soften it somewhat by tilting her head to the side a beautiful softening cue, but then added to the mix a mouth cues. She pressed her lips together in a modified pucker. Though her eyes were beautiful she stared without blinking the combination I shared could make her look a bit assertive and judgmental.

February 22, 2010 (PLANSPONSOR.com) – A new global survey by Hewitt Associates indicates that effectively addressing human capital issues can be a critical tipping point in the success of an organization’s deal.
According to a news release, Hewitt compared the survey responses of companies that exceeded deal objectives (Overachievers) versus those organizations that did not achieve their deal objectives (Underachievers), and found a clear link between deal success and investment in leadership and key talent issues. Overachievers and Underachievers both say leadership and talent strategies are important to the success of a deal (69% versus 62%, respectively), but less than a third (32%) of Underachievers report their leadership and key talent strategy in transactions as being effective, compared with 70% of Overachievers.
In addition, the news release said, Overachievers are twice as likely to effectively identify and retain leaders (81% versus 42%) and assess critical talent (73% versus 35%).
A separate Hewitt analysis shows that the loss of critical employees can have a devastating impact on corporate transactions. Based on a sample of 96 companies representing more than $568 billion in total deal value over a two-year period, the analysis found that more than $54 billion - or 10% - of a deal’s value depends on the rate at which critical employees separate during or immediately after corporate transactions.
Hewitt’s quarterly M&A pulse survey of 278 organizations around the world shows that 72% expect to increase their deal activity over the next two years.
Nearly half (47%) said their past transactions did not achieve their intended financial and strategic objectives. While almost two-thirds (65%) of companies indicate that leadership and key talent retention are critical to the success of a deal, 49% of these organizations report they have lost critical employees at the same rate or at an even higher rate than non-critical employees.
"Human capital is one of the top three intangible assets of any organization, yet many companies fail to execute a rigorous and sustained leadership and key talent approach, permitting key leaders and talent to walk out the door," said Elizabeth Fealy, global leader of Hewitt’s Corporate Transaction and Transformation practice, in the news release. "As companies prepare for 2010 and beyond, there is a real opportunity to shift the dial. Having a formal strategy and game plan for leadership and key talent and effectively executing on it is critical for achieving better deal success."

I was stunned to learn the influence of her demanding father on Vera's career. After she studied drams and art history at Sarah Lawrence College and spent her Junior year at he Sorbonne in Paris she wished to attend design school, but her father refused to pay for it, saying "If you are such a hot shot, get a job," She got one at Vogue and then went on to Ralph Lauren she spent two decades in the magazine business and went back to her dad who said, "You may know magazines but you don't know the fashion business." He backed her on the condition she open a bridal business." She did, even though her favorite "color" is black. Her new line has a long black wedding dress.

Actions speak louder than words, Rozlyn! Disgraced 'Bachelor' contestant Rozlyn Papa, who was booted from the show mid-season for having an inappropriate relationship with a producer, still has something to hide, according to our body language experts. When host Chris Harrison confronted her on the 'Bachelor: Women Tell All' special on Monday night, Roz was not being entirely truthful.
Our experts say declaratory statements often indicate deception, so Rozlyn probably wasn't telling the whole truth when she declared, "On my child's life, that never happened!"
The tone of her voice was also a giveaway that the blonde beauty wasn't being entirely honest.
"When denying the accusations, the pitch of her voice was considerably higher, this is indicative of stress," explains body language expert Vincent Harris. "When we are being deceptive or lying, we become more stressed."
Her stance also indicated fear. "She moved her hands to interlock around her crossed legs at the front of her shin in a log cabin guard. This low log cabin shows she is very fearful. She is still protecting herself. Even though her back is up and she is nodding her head, her lower body is showing she is scared of what Chris will say next," explains body language expert Patti Wood.
The other bachelorettes expressed their mortification at Rozlyn's actions through self-satisfied smirks while they watched her squirm in the hot seat. The camera continually panned to Ashley, who wasn't delighting as much as everyone else. Ashley was pissed!
"We see Ashley lips tightly pressed downward and her angry eyes. Ashley is dying to yell something," Wood explains.
As Harrison repeatedly asked Rozlyn whether anything inappropriate occurred in the house, her brow furrowed, another sign of anxiety and stress.
When Ella started to get judgey about Rozlyn's actions, if you watch closely you can see Rozlyn's top lip start to curl.
"This is a sign of her underlying anger; anger that she is working to suppress, but that is leaking out anyway. These small 'leaks' are all but impossible to conceal, hide or prevent, and give us a sneak peek at what emotion she is really feeling," Harris says.
But she isn't just lying about her relationship with the producer. Rozlyn seems to be lying about everything. At one point, she tells the other ladies that she never said anything bad about them after she left the show. Probably not true.
"She shoulder shrugs when she says she never said anything but nice things about the other women," says Janine Driver, author of 'YOU SAY MORE THAN YOU THINK: A 7-Day Plan For Using the New Body Language to Get What You Want!' "Which means it's deception. A shoulder shrug cancels out the verbal message so we know she has talked negatively about these women in the past."
And what's Chris Harrison trying to hide? When Roz bit back at Chris, claiming he hit on her producer friend's wife in New Zealand, Chris got a little cagey.
"Chris broke eye contact, looked down and appeared to struggle with making direct eye contact with Rozlyn again. The Bachelor, Rozlyn's body language. Here are my rough notes for a story I did today. As she comes down the hallway in the back of the studio, she her shoulders are back her head is forward there is a nervous yet expectant smile on her face. Her lavender dress is flowing soft in ruffled tiers away from her body. She has chosen to dress in a very feminine dress not something tight and bold but at the same time short and exposing one shoulder completely and the other partially. She knows she looks good. When she comes into the studio, she faces the hate wall of the bachelorettes most with pressed down lips frowns and other more fierce facial expressions. If you screen grab on the way she sits down you will note how unusual it is. Under neath her crossed legs she clasps her hands under her thigh. It looks like she is hiding the view of her underwear. Symbolically she is hiding her “femininity. “From attack. As the host says, he bears him, no ill will she bounces in a mock bow/strike to him with her upper body. Still protecting her lower body saying, “I thought we would get into a cage match.”
As she comes back, she moves her hands to interlock around her crossed legs at the front of her shin. In a log cabin guard. This low log cabin shows she is very fearful. The host again comes back to “Did anything physical happen in the house. She says the same thing no absolutely not….he asks again and she says’ ….Nothing.” again begins to lick and bite her lips with anxiety. She draws her crossed legs in closer to her body.
As the other women begin to speak one discusses her little rear end in the air incident where one of the women says Rozlyn” want to be put to bed by the producer”
As they start taking touching thigh, putting to be, sleeping.

Parent Magazine, Baby body language
I just did an interview with Parent Magazine about baby body language. We talked about what a small child's arm cross means and what parents can do when their child is presented with something new, such as a rocking horse and crossed their arms. We talked about how there are over sixty seven different motivations for someone crossing their arms. I suggested that the parent know the baseline of their child's normal behavior and then if they find their child crossing their arms, if they don't usually cross their arms they know it is that event that is causing the arm cross. Since the rocking horse could be new a scary. I suggested that the parent could tell the child how the horse moves and how it sounds at it moves then the parent can use there hands to make the rocking horse move.

Tiger Woods' mom Kultida was furious, heartbroken during his apology, say body language expert. Article in New York Daily News
barely controlled her rage as she watched her son apologize Friday for his cheating ways, body language experts said.
A famously guarded woman who reportedly dealt with infidelity in her own marriage, Kultida crossed her arms and glowered at the floor as she listened to Tiger admit his "foolish" philandering.
"She was extraordinarily tense. I'd say it was anger," said Patti Wood, an Atlanta-based body language specialist. "Her mouth was downward and pursed very tight, like she was holding back very negative emotions."
At the end of Tiger's remarks, Kultida eventually cracked a smile and hugged and kissed her son before defending him to reporters.
"You know what? I'm so proud to be his mother," she said at the heavily scripted event in Florida.
"People don't understand that Tiger has a very good heart and soul."
Still, she couldn't hide her personal pain as the camera rolled.
Kultida said her son would learn from his mistakes and that his return to Buddhism would "make him a much better person."

Celebrity body language expert Patti Wood says warm, caring greetings are extremely important love signals for keeping the love alive.
“Always make a loving ritual of hellos and goodbyes,” stresses Wood.
No matter where you are in the house, drop whatever you’re doing, and greet your spouse with a kiss and or a hug hello when they come home. “Go to them immediately, even if you are on the phone, cooking or online.” This communicates that he or she is the most important thing to you.
“You are saying nonverbally, ‘You come first,’” says Wood, adding that no warm welcome actually increases the chance of arguing later on.
Goodbye hugs and kisses have a big impact too. These gestures say “I leave you with love,” says Wood. “With a touch goodbye, you anchor to your mate.”
She also recommends creating a “secret” – a non-verbal love signal shared just between the two of you. “The look can mean, ‘I love you,’ ‘I want you right now’ or ‘You look great to me’,” suggests Wood, a savvy motivational speaker.
Your secret love signal could be as simple as a sly smile, or your lips puckered up, or maybe a quick wrinkling up of the nose. It could be as simple as a tilt to the head to indicate you’d like to rest your head on his shoulder as a gesture of warmth and respect, says Wood, of pattiwood.net.
Words are not needed, she adds. “The secret love signal can recreate the love each time it is given.”
She also suggests focusing on care-taking signals to strengthen relationships, like bringing someone a glass of water or making them a cup of tea. Picking up their dry cleaning for them or even packing them a healthy snack for work.

Body Language Methods to Avoid a Bore or Stop Talking and End a Conversation.
Avoiding a bore. Tips to stopping or ending a conversation.
Yesterday morning I did a BBC radio program on how to avoid a boring co-worker. One of the producers on the show had called the Host of the show and pretended he was having a conversation with him in order to avoid talking to a borring co-worker that was walking towards his desk. That is one technique here are other tips for avoiding or ending a conversation. Excerpts from my book.
There are things you do subconsciously to shut down conversation that you can do consciously to close down a conversation with someone.
You can close the window of your eyes, by closing both your eyes for just a brief moment longer than you do for an ordinary blink.
You can do a head bow and bring your down the head avoiding or breaking eye contact as the person approaches or less dramatically and more quickly if you are already in conversation.
You can turn shut your mouth tightly so help avoid giving facial feedback to the boring co-worker as feedback increases the likelihood they will continue talking.
You can turn your heart away and you can turn your toes away.

Lifting weights has some seriously cool benefits: It increases lean muscle mass, which boosts metabolism and helps torch calories and shed stubborn fat. It also improves the quality of your sleep, wards off back pain, and protects you from disease.
Despite all this, many women dodge the dumbbells at the gym—in fact, only 21 percent strength-train two or three times a week. It may be that the rest are misguided, feel intimidated, or are just plain avoiding it!
Well, the excuses end here. We enlisted top trainers to create this easy-to-follow weight-room cheat sheet. The payoff of pumping more iron will be a leaner, sexier you.
1. Have a Plan
When you enter an unfamiliar situation (say, the free-weight zone), your body will naturally freeze for a moment and only your eyes will move, says body-language expert Patti Wood, author of Success Signals: Body Language in Business. It's an obvious physical sign that you're confused. Decide beforehand what you'll do as soon as you go into the room. For example, make a beeline for the dumbbells. But which ones? Lifting too much too soon can hurt your form and put you at risk for injury, but grabbing two-pounders won't get you results. New York City personal trainer Dan Ownes gives a head-to-toe exercise barometer of just-right weights for beginners:
If you're doing...lateral raises
Start with...2.5 to 5 pounds in each hand
If you're doing...biceps curls
Start with...5 to 8 pounds in each hand
If you're doing...flat-bench dumbbell rows
Start with...12 to 20 pounds
If you're doing...chest presses
Start with...12 pounds (body bar) to 45 pounds
If you're doing...squats
Start with...zero (body weight) to 45 pounds
2. Stay Steady
The occasional slam of a weight stack is par for the course when you're using resistance equipment like the cable machine or seated leg press, but causing a storm of noise is a classic newbie doh! And it's more than just bad manners. "Lowering the weight without control can result in injury," says Brad Schoenfeld, owner of the Personal Training Center for Women in Scarsdale, New York, and author of Women's Home Workout Bible. "It can also prevent you from getting the tone you're after, because you don't work through the full range of motion." Lower the weights slowly enough that you can perform every rep of the exercise with good form (and less clanking!).
3. Breathe Easy
Even seasoned lifters sometimes forget to breathe during a tough move. But it's counterproductive. "You starve the body of oxygen, which forces your heart to work a lot harder," says certified strength and conditioning specialist Josh Kernen, owner of Bridgetown Physical Therapy & Training Studio in Portland, Oregon. Exhale during the major exertion in each move, and inhale while returning to the starting position.
4. Break a Sweat
Go full-steam, or you might as well go home. A good way to gauge your effort: Monitor how hard you feel like your body is working. It's called your rating of perceived exertion (RPE), and it's usually measured on a scale of one to 10, with one being very little exertion (like lounging in bed) and 10 being the max (running away from an angry dog). To build and tone muscle, aim for an RPE of at least seven or eight during workouts, says Kernen. "Even if you're happy with your tone, you still have to hit six or seven to maintain muscle mass."
5. Think Total Body
Your muffin top may be the only thing that's motivating you to hit the gym, but it's a mistake to attack just your least-favorite assets. "Spot-reducing exercises simply don't work," says Schoenfeld. Full-body workouts torch fat more efficiently because they build more lean muscle mass, which in turn burns more calories per day. And think about it: Wouldn't you rather eradicate all your jiggle?

"We get nonverbal messages from the people around us every day—often, we're just not paying enough attention," says Sherron Bienvenu, Ph. D., a communications professor emerita at Emory University's Goizueta Business School and author of Business Communications. Following is a crash course in ferreting out whether your workplace colleagues think you're smart, likable, or neither!
Your Coworkers Like You If...
They initiate conversations
Coffee klatches have gone the way of cigarette breaks—they're all but extinct. Nowadays most people communicate by e-mail, IM, or phone. "So if your colleagues are chatting you up in the hallway, they're taking time to break routine to speak to you," says Patti Wood, an Atlanta-based body language expert. If they avert their eyes or sneak glances at their watches during a conversation, they may not be so into you.
They offer feedback
During a one-on-one, does your coworker nod thoughtfully and lean into your conversation? Do the corners of her eyes crinkle when she smiles in response to funny comments you make? "The more animated a person's face, the more emotionally invested they are in the conversation," says Tonya Reiman, a New York City-based body language expert and the author of The Power of Body Language.
They're smooth talkers
"People deviate from their normal speech patterns when they're nervous or uncomfortable," says Maryann Karinch, a body language expert based outside Denver and a coauthor of How to Spot a Liar. Someone who normally speaks at a leisurely pace might become a speed talker, while a person who usually talks quickly might pause for long moments. If they enjoy your company, you won't notice a change in their vocal stride.

They keep quiet
Asking for your opinion—that's a no-brainer. But letting you take control of a conversation is a less obvious way to show how much they care about what you have to say. "You can see the degree to which other people respect you by observing how often they look to you for a reaction or a cue," says psychologist Ann Demarais, Ph. D., a coauthor of First Impressions: What You Don't Know About How Others See You. "And when a problem arises, they turn to face you."
They make room for you
"When you sit down at a meeting, see if your neighbors move their stuff closer to themselves and out of your way, or push their chair back a bit to give you more room," Demarais says. "That shows respect."
They copy you
What they say about imitation and flattery is true: "Subconsciously, we try to mirror people we like and respect," Reiman says. So if you notice your coworker mimicking your movements—for example, picking up her pen or cupping her chin with her hand when you do—she probably admires you.

He goes the extra mile
He spends an hour trying to fix your frozen computer, gives up his chair at a crowded conference room table, or offers to pick you up a latte during his afternoon coffee run. Maybe he's just an incredibly nice guy—but more likely, he's into you.
He drops your name
Saying things like "Hi, Jane," or "How are you doing, Jane?" may seem like common courtesy, but it's actually an intimate gesture. Consider it the verbal equivalent of a touch on the arm—a way to get more personal.
He's a stand-up guy
In the civilized world as in the wild, strong, physically imposing alpha males have the best shot at mating. So men instinctively want to make themselves seem bigger and badder around women they're interested in, Reiman says. Top Ten Favorite Books
I am a voracious reader. I devour at least one novel a week. In fact, since junior high I have averaged about two books a week. If you are going to have an addiction, a "Jones" for books is not a bad one. As a body language expert, I am often taken with the talent of certain authors to detail a facial expression, gesture or tone of voice. In my friend John and I's Evening and Emory Class called the Meeting of the Minds we would ask the students to bring their favorite book on the fourth week of class. We often ended up trading Top Ten favorite book lists. My list changes a bit from year to year. The Secret Garden has been on my list since grade school. My affinity for Science fiction is no longer apparent from this list. I have taken off two books that where on the list I had in High School, "Stranger in a Strange Land" and Arthur C Clark's "Childhoods End." Though it is Junior Fiction Phillip Pullman's "The Golden Compass" was not on the list till 1998 when I found it on the search for something like the Harry Potter books. I took that wonderful book off the list this year to put on a book that still haunts me, "The Post Birthday World." While I really enjoyed, "Julie, Julia" and "Eat Pray Love", last year they did not make the list this year. In fact, I am back to old favorites. Here is the current list.

In Junior High and High School I loved science fiction of all kinds, I read every Agatha Christie novel (I think there are over 87 novels) and everything I could find about King Aurthur and the Knights of the Round Table. In grad school I found the female perspective of the Aurthur legend, "The Mists of Avalon." I can still remember reading the 1,400 page novel over a spring break. Most of the reading was done while I sat in a beach chair at my mom's house in SawGrass Florida. I faced toward the ocean for seven days, but didn't get any sun on my chin, because my face was down inside the novel. The Book description on Amazon says, "Even readers who don't normally enjoy Arthurian legends will love this version, a retelling from the point of view of the women behind the throne. Morgaine (more commonly known as Morgan Le Fay) and Gwenhwyfar (a Welsh spelling of Guinevere) struggle for power, using Arthur as a way to score points and promote their respective worldviews. The Mists of Avalon's Camelot politics and intrigue take place at a time when Christianity is taking over the island-nation of Britain; Christianity vs. Faery, and God vs. Goddess are dominant themes."

Not a Timid Soul
After I finish speaking I often have audience members come up and ask how they can speak with out fear. I share with them, that I have many tools that I use that I can teach them to reduce destructive fear, use constructive fear and ride the wave of excitement to enjoy speaking. The fear is there when you care, it inspired you to work hard, to do your very best, and then risk to go beyond the hardest thing you have ever done, go beyond what you think is your very best. To take a step and even dare to leap into the void and believe that you can fly. Here is a quote to inspire you and to continually inspire me.

In the UK Photo shopping could become illegal. Conservative parliamentarian Valérie Boyer, asks, When writers take a news item or real event and considerably embellish it, they are required to alert readers by calling the work fiction, a novel or a story based on dramatized facts. Why should it be any different for photographs?”

Retouched photos, beauty and attractiveness
My friend Jim is a media lighting expert. He also retouches headshots and other still photos. He takes your photo and turns you into a work of art. I told his I wish he could follow me around all day magically retouching my image. But alas, he cannot. I put his retouch of my last head shot on blog entry, but I don’t use that version in my promotional material. I fear that a client or producer who saw the unlined face in the photo might see me show up for a speech or media interview and say, “Where’s Patti?”

Does a Wagging Tail Mean My Dog is Happy?
Does a wagging tail mean your dog is happy?
Dogs often wag their tales when they are anxious and stressed and they use a tale wag with other dogs t show they are submissive. Though most cartoon dogs wag there tail in happiness. Thinking a wagging tale on your dog always means it happy is the most common misconception you can have when reading your dog.
Just as there are many meaning for a human’ smile depending on its speed and how it’s given, there a many meanings for a dogs tail wag depending on its speed and the way it carried. There are over fifty different types of smiles in humans. We smile not only when we are happy but when we are feeling a multitude of other emotions as well. Dog’s tails also communicate many different things.
. Happy dog tail wags differ between breeds. Moreover, just as humans have different personalities and different smiles each dog has his own personality and different wags. So how do you know your dog is giving a happy tail wag?
A good first step is noticing when you dog have a reason to be happy and noticing his wag. How high it is held, the breath of its swing. Catching your dog in a happy moment will help you get what we call a "norm" for your dog. Also note breed and personalities difference first. A Sincere happy smile makes you approachable. In human body language it says “I am friendly I am submissive." and "I respect you, and won’t hurt you.
A dog’s happy tail wag says, “I respect you I am submissive and know that you won’t hurt me.”
A happy sincere smile goes all the way up the face to cheeks the eyes and the brows moving like a wave
A dogs happy tail wag, involves not just the tail it typically also involves the rump that lowers and swings the hips with the tails swing.
A broad smile on a human face says I am friendly.
A broad tail wag says the same thing.
A narrow tight smile says, “Don’t bother me.”
Just as dog’s tail held high over the back with very narrow tight short side to side at high-speed tail movements say, “I'm stressed." or "Back off."
I think it is about time I go give Bo the wonder dog a little treat so I can see his truly happy wagging tail.
