Stress and Finding Balance Tip

1.      Choose to feel good. We complain about sore muscles as if they were badges of honor for being such hard workers. If your muscles are sore get a massage ask for a backrub or Get buckwheat-filled heating or cooling packs from a salon or on the Internet. You can pop one in the microwave and wear it when you're on the computer. They feel wonderful, and you relieve those sore neck and shoulder muscles at the same time.

Stress and Finding Balance Tip

1.      Anchor yourself to relaxation. Whenever you find yourself very relaxed, in the morning, in your car or maybe on the couch, put your hand on your stomach and say the word “relaxed.” Then breathe in and out slowly. Do this religiously for 21 days. Once you have anchored the touch of your hand on your stomach to the state of relaxation in your brain, you can use it to relax quickly in any tense situation. When you're about to give a speech, place your hand on your stomach and your brain will say, "Oh that means relaxation" and it will cause your body to relax. It’s like a magic trick.

Jay Z and Beyonce's Body Language

Beyonce, 32, looked downright angry while watching a basketball game next to Jay Z, 44, in November 2012.  Patti observes that she is literally giving him the cold shoulder.  Her arm is like a barrier toward him. Her lips are pressed together tightly and her nostrils are flared.

Patti gives this couple a 2 on the Life & Style True Love Rating scale.

In May 2014 the couple looked much happier during a game.  Her weight is shifted toward him and she is welcoming his touch.  It is a very sexual touch from Jay Z.  His hand is saying, "She's all mine."

Patti gives this couple a 4 1/2 on the Life & Style True Love Rating scale.

1.      Make play the topic of conversation. This week, whenever you are on a break or away from work, avoid any mention of work. Talk about anything and everything else. Notice how you feel and how you create more positive body language in others.

How do you know what types of people belong together?

If you look on my blog at Bodylanguaeglady@blogspot.com and put in "couples body language or couple body language” or pick up this week’s Life & Style and go to the Couple Heart Rating page you will see how I analyze peoples' body language to tell how they are doing and predict what will happen. I read from the feet up as the feet are the most honest portion of the body and the feet point to where the heart wants to go. I look at where the pelvis is pointing to see the sexual connection and the hands to see the heart connections and so much more.

Stress and Finding Balance Tip

1.      What do you do for fun? Ask people that you meet what they do for fun or if you know them what have they done recently for fun. Watch how their body language changes. It is so much fun. You may see someone's shoulders go back. A facial expression “face lift”, A head tilt up. In Paris it is rude to ask someone what they do for a living. You ask them what they do for fun. Have you made any fun lately?

What about your style or technique differentiates you from your fellow love and body language  expert peers in your coaching.
Hands on learning. So I will observe them. Have them do "self checks" work with them in the mirror, go through role plays and exercises,  send them out on assignments, go out with them and video tape and coach. My clients often say that when they thought about being coached they were scared or thought it would be boring or they couldn't change so quickly and found out that when they found me and started working that they were surprised that we laugh a lot and that they can learn so much so quickly.

Stress and Finding Balance Tip

1.      Change stress to challenge. When you find yourself saying or thinking, "I am so busy" or "I am overwhelmed," replace those thoughts with positive ideas, such as:
I am getting so much done.
 I feel so challenged lately.
I am learning how much I can get done in a day.
I have things I can accomplish easily and so much to be grateful for.
When I do the things I need to do I feel better.
I will do one thing right now.

Say the new thought out loud putting your body language in the position that makes you feel that way

Stress and Finding Balance Tip

1.      Create reminders in your day to take time to breathe deeply. Your reminder could be a red light, a raised voice, your own yawn, soreness or pain in any part of your body, the hour changing on the computer clock, the urge for a snack or drink a cup of coffee. Try this full breaking technique. Breathe in on a count of three, hold for a count of three and breathe out on a count of three.

What inspired you to get into the field of love/dating and analyzing celebrity couples body language?

As a child I noticed that I had this unusual ability to read people. Starting in the fourth grade and through college I carried a little notebook with me everywhere. I would watch people and write poetry and song lyrics about what I saw. I saw peoples' happiness, their love and their pain. I am  passionate about helping people find love and keep the healthy love they find.  And yes, I have matched up couples and my girlfriends want me to read their dates and or sweeties and my clients show me photos of them with their love interest to read.

From Cold to Cozy - Body Language Read of Zoe and Marco

Zoe Saldana and Marco Perego look tense after shopping in Beverly Hills on Dec. 23rd.  Patti observes that she is pushing him down and away.  Also the way Marco's shoulders are positioned shows that he is feeling disconnected.  Patti gives the "so tense" couple a 2 on the True Love Rating Scale for Life & Style

However, the married couple of 8 months were feeling frisky in Milan in April.  Patti notes that they are shaped like a heart in the April pic.  Patti likes her smile and notes that she is holding in the love as he kisses her. Five Mistakes People Make When It Comes To Their Love Lives

  1.  Falling in LUST at first sight.  The notion of Lust at first sight seems obvious after the relationship is over, but can seem like true love each time you fall into it. The problem is, you are so physically attracted that it blinds you to what the person’s true personality, or even an accurate read of the two critical first impression factors credibly and likability. Hormones are powerful.
  2.  DANGER at first sight.  DANGER at first site is very interesting as it is a misread of our physiological responses to danger. When we see someone dangerous the limbic responds in a Freeze, Flight, Fall or Faint Response. We might misread the heart racing, breathless physical state and think this is so intense this must be love, when it may really be the central nervous system's response to someone very scary. So don’t date that guy or gal run for the hills. Look for Danger signals. From overly aggressive forward motions,  unappreciated touch to ignoring your "discomfort" cues to seeing if someone has "closed heart window" and or "closed palm window". There are so many danger at first sight cues.
  3. Ideal projection- Falling for the” idea” of a person rather than the real person. Everybody does it to some extent and in a long term relationship research shows a little bit of idealizing helps you believe the best about your partner. But it can be dangerous if you are truly blind to a person faults, . You need to see what is there rather than what is being faked. There are so many cues given off in the first fifteen minutes of a conversation that are tell you truth, and give you insight into the real person. Oddly one simple cue, how much time they spend gently gazing is incredibly revealing, that is, not staring, but a look, smile, look away, look again. sequence of cues.
  4. Frozen with fear -Keeping you from getting in the fame. Being afraid to go out and meet people and date, because you are concerned about choosing incorrectly, not being accepted, or getting terribly hurt. Or if you are dating or in a relationship, frozen with fear so you don’t talk to your partner, fix problems or get out if the relationship is toxic. There are so many people frozen in bad relationships. Frozen might be a great animated film, but it is not how you want to spend your life. There are too many people frozen and in need of warmth in their lives.
  5. Faking it – It was fun to pretend as a kid, not so fun as a grown up. Beware of pretending you love someone. Pretending you are happy. Pretending you are someone you are not. First of all that is a heck of a lot of work and a lots of heartache for all involved.

I write more extensively on these issues on this blog as these are problems I have researched and written about since I taught body language at Florida State. You can find more on the blog by typing in the key mistake!

Stress and Finding Balance Tip

1.    Count to ten. When you're upset, count to ten. When you're mad or angry, you are operating from the emotional limbic brain (what we use to call the right hemisphere of the brain.) Numbers are in the brain’s neocortex. (left hemisphere). Counting gets your brain to switch to the your more logical brain this automatically gets you to feel calmer

Deception Detection - What To Do After You Find Out

I do deception detection training for law enforcement, corporate clients, hospitals and casinos. Recently I was asked to share with a media source what to do when you have found out there has been a lie or cover-up. So here are ten things to do when you have discovered an employee lying, cheating or stealing.

You really need to get a read on the person before you have a discussion or attempt to uncover deception. Sometimes it is just a small lie or bad behavior by an overall good person, but if the problem is serious or a criminal or the person is unstable you may have to deal with some uncomfortable or even dangerous behavior.  Someone who has been living with the fear of being “found out” may be in a heightened state of stress for a long time.  Think of what you would do to prepare to come upon a soldier in a war zone.  The person may be very afraid and ready to attack or defend. Proceed and deal with that person cautiously.

1.       Have evidence. Having visual hard evidence, specific facts in a list form on paper, videotapes, things that they can see and or touch is helpful.
2.       Know exactly what you’re going to say.  Write it down, prepare and practice.
3.       If you want to get them to talk or tell you why, you may want to use the phrase, “I know what you did, and I know you want to tell me everything.” “I know you did this, and you will feel so much better if you tell me everything.”
4.       Have your plan of what you will do and what they need to do and be prepared to take action and follow through immediately.
5.       Some people will crumble right away and apologize. Be prepared to act with compassion and forgiveness for someone who made a mistake and is not a bad person or compulsive liar.
6.       If a liar thinks they have an out or delay, they can be very persuasive and manipulative.  Be prepared, they may use tears and anger to try to get you to change your plans.
7.        If someone is a compulsive liar be prepared, they will continue to deny any evidence you give them of their deceit.
8.       Be prepared to repeat your statements of evidence. Repeat your plan and what they need to do. Also be prepared to say,”I hear what you’re saying, but I need to do… and you must do …” or even, “No matter what you say, this is what needs to happen.”
9.       When they are gone and you are done, plan to do something with someone you trust and care about to ground you and remind you that most people are good and kind. Don’t berate yourself for being deceived, it happens.
10.   Protect yourself from cynicism. Look for kind, caring and honest people.   The most recent research says that people who expect people to be good and have people in their life that have integrity can more accurately detect deceit.

Fight in elevator footage and body language reading of Solange, Beyoncé and Jay Z

The body language read below of the elevator fight will appear in the New York Daily News.

Solange, Jay Z, Beyoncé fight in the elevator video is in the New York Daily News. The video is at the link below.
BY PATTI WOOD
After reviewing the shocking Standard Hotel elevator footage, I’m certain of two things:
Solange Knowles’ anger has been building up for some time – and Jay Z and Beyonce are used to her outbursts.
There are many indications that she had a long-standing source of anger.
Let's start with her weapon moves, Solange pointed and jabbed her finger at him over 12 times.
And she kept after him even after being held in the arms of the body guard, she didn’t just have one problem with him. She had a list. She had lots that she wanted to tell him.
It’s very interesting that Solange does most of the beginning of  attack with her feet.  That’s her primal wiring. The feet are the most honest portion of the body.
Her kicks are violent and they don’t abate quickly. Again this shows that her anger has been building up for a while.
Jay Z and Beyonce barely moved there body language stayed straight up down forward with aggression of backward in retreat. That’s telling.
They were oddly both standing straight up and down, while Solange had multiple clusters of attack moves including body, feet, chest, arms and hands and head and chin thrusts,
They didn’t feel the need to become aggressive or defensive because they had seen this behavior before.
Beyonce faced toward her sister but does not show any overt correction behavior to stop her.  Jay Z’s posture movements and facial expression suggests he was not afraid of her. He was protecting himself, but only slightly.
For example when kicked he held her foot but doesn’t; counter attack. This tells me they’re used to her venting and venting, and then stopping
The most fascinating part of the nonverbal read is that Solange's outburst turned on when she got into the elevator and turned off as she calmly walked out behind them.

What qualifies you to be a one on one coach and help people improve their body language for dating, flirting and relationships?
Being a personal coach is incredible. There is so much to teach. When I work with clients that are trying to improve their ability to date it’s so much fun to do the work. I share that I feel that the greatest gift you can give someone is to understand them. Reading Nonverbal Communication increases your understanding. In a healthy loving relationship you want to present your best most authentic self. You want to be seen to your heart.  I speak to audiences and work one on one with coaching clients on their nonverbal skills. I have a passion for teaching and coaching others in nonverbal skills. I love to see people light up, lean forward, learn and transform.

My BA Master’s Degree and Doctoral course work are in Interpersonal Communication with an emphasis in Nonverbal Communication. I know the science and the latest research, and how to apply and teach the latest concepts and techniques in a way that is informative and fun. I can quote to science and make a client laugh in the next breath. When I taught body language at Florida State University my students LOVED to come to class because they knew they would laugh and have fun. My corporate audiences feel that energy. I work one on one with clients to improve their image, flirting, dating and relationship skills. I have clients who are college students, young, older and divorced, from just starting out to owners of several companies, from clients working two jobs to get by to billionaires. I love this work. I am also the first body language expert to read celebrity couples' body language for magazines. I did weekly reads of couples reading their current relationship and predicting their success. I did this for four years for US Weekly, two years for OK! Magazine and I'm in my second year for reads for Life & Style.

Stress and Finding Balance Tip

1.      Take action instead of complaining. If you find you are complaining about something, then figure out one thing you can do to improve the situation and do it.

Realize if you are tense your body language is reflecting that tension. Taking action creates “power” body language changing your body chemistry so you feel better.

Johnny and Amber Hit a Rough Patch

On April 21, Johnny Depp, 50, and his fiancee, Amber Heard, 28, emerged from her birthday dinner in a seemingly sour mood. Notice how pulled-back her pelvis is, she is walking stiffly.  Even her lips are tense according to Patti.  Johnny is showing an extreme effort to reach back and hold her hand.  In the 2011 pic Amber looked proud to stand next to Johnny.  They are having fun and are at ease in this photo.

Patti gives the Happy as can be couple in 2011 a 5 on the True Love Rating Scale.

Are YOU 'beautiful'? Try the simple 'hot or not' finger test that's taking social media by storm

  • Known as 'Beauty and Ugliness Identification Method' or 'finger trap test'
  • Based on the 3.1 ratio, used by surgeons to create 'perfect profile'
  • Trending on Weibo, China's answer to Facebook
  • Place your index finger against chin and nose to see if your lips touch it
  • If they do, you're officially 'beautiful'
Published: 07:19 EST, 1 May 2014 | Updated: 07:56 EST, 2 May 2014

Can a single finger test determine whether you are beautiful or ugly? Apparently so, if the latest social media craze is anything to go by.
On Weibo, the Chinese version of Facebook, thousands of users are participating in the 'Beauty and Ugliness Identification Method' also known as the 'finger trap test'.

So how do you determine if you're 'beautiful'? Place your index finger against your chin and nose to see if your lips touch it. If they do, congratulations, you're officially hot. If they don't, just ignore the results.

Beauty test: On Weibo, the Chinese version of Facebook, thousands of users are participating in the 'Beauty and Ugliness Identification Method' also known as the 'finger trap test', if your finger touches your lips, you're officially beautiful like James Hollobone, pictured
Even Chinese celebrities have posted photos of themselves trying out the bizarre test, which is trending in over 200,000 Weibo discussions, where the majority of participants are women.

The trend, which was spotted by Vocativ.com., is being dubbed China's digital answer to 'Hot or Not'.
It is loosely based on the 3.1 ratio theory, which is used by cosmetic surgeons to create the 'perfect profile' which equates to your nose, lips and chin all being in a perfect line down your face.

Is he hot? The trend is being dubbed China's digital answer to 'Hot or Not'; Paddy Hyslop, pictured, is beautiful, if the test is anything to go by
Dr Mark Holmes at McIndoe Surgical Centre said of the test: 'This is actually a bone fide test for lower facial symmetry and proportions. It is called Rickett's E-line.
'Like the Golden Ratio devised by the ancient Greeks, they are tests experienced cosmetic doctors use when assessing and planning cosmetic treatments.
'Is it a sign of beauty? That's a stretch. But part of beauty is determined by symmetry and correct proportions. However, it take no account of someone's energy and personality.'

Beautiful: Katy Winter is classed as beautiful, according to the test, which is loosely based on the 3.1 ratio theory used by cosmetic surgeons to create the 'perfect profile'

Not so hot: Bianca London isn't classed as attractive but it's OK, beauty is only skin deep, after all...
Consultant cosmetic surgeon Brent Tanner, who works out of the Spire Tunbridge Wells Hospital, Nuffield Health Brighton Hospital and Montefiore, Hove, added: 'Although this trend is based on classical principles that date back to the time of Leonardo Da Vinci it is a very simplistic view and beauty is based on much more than one set of ratios.
'It’s a fun test to do but must be taken with a pinch of salt. Beauty is not only in the eye of the beholder but we must remember that throughout the world different races not only have different characteristics but also different beauty ideals and therefore this is far too general to convey any real meaning.'

WHAT IS RICKETT'S E-LINE?
This concept dates back to the 1950s and the work of the orthodontist Dr. Robert Ricketts, who focused on what he called the 'E-plane'.
This is simply a line drawn from the tip of the nose to the tip of the chin.

He believed that to have what he called a  'pleasing facial profile', in the average Caucasian face, the lips would touch the plane - or in the finger trap's case, the finger- running from the nose to the chin.

Men find women more attractive with LESS make-up on – Attractiveness new research mentioned on the Today Show. Body Language expert Patti Wood comments

The results of the study are below. But this is not real research. They used photos of women with tons of make up on rather than subtle make up and they didn’t randomize the test and the subjects knew what the research study was on creating bias. If they had just been shown photos of women in normal make up and photos of women without make up in a random study with other photos say photos of men and asked to rate on several factors it would have perhaps been an effective study.

Bare really is beautiful: Men find women more attractive with LESS make-up on

  • Study found men prefer women when they wear less make-up
  • In many cases, men preferred the opposite sex to wear 40% fewer products
  • It also found women think fellow females look better in natural make-up
  • Participants in the study believed other individuals find greater amounts of makeup attractive, but the research proved otherwise
Published: 09:01 EST, 21 March 2014 | Updated: 10:37 EST, 21 March 2014
Women all over the world have been wiping off their make-up and taking photos of themselves to be part of the #nomakeupselfie phenomenon spreading across social networks.
And they might want to consider making the natural snap their profile picture, because a new study has found both men, and women, find females who wear less make-up more attractive.
A Welsh psychologist said people often misjudge what the opposite sex find attractive and, in the majority of cases, men prefer women who wear up to 40 per cent fewer cosmetics.

Put down the blusher brush: Men think women are more attractive when wearing 40 per cent less make-up, a study has found. Katy Perry is pictured as a more natural beauty, (left) and with bright make-up (right)
Dr Alex Jones, from Bangor University, said there had been an ‘overwhelmingly positive’ reaction to no make-up selfies posted by people on social networks.
While nobody seems to know where the idea came from, it has taken the internet by storm and is thought to have raised over £1million for charity.

It works by women posting a fresh-faced picture of themselves and then nominating friends to do the same, with all people posting that the photos were to 'raise awareness of cancer'.
In Dr Jones' study, he examined the misattributions people make when considering what the opposite sex find attractive in a new study be published in the Quarterly Journal of Experimental Psychology.

His research project specifically examined the use of cosmetics and found some surprising results.

Dr Jones said: ‘The take home message from this study is that our ideas about what the opposite sex find attractive are often inaccurate, whether it relates to body size, weight, or even something like makeup use'. Kim Kardashian is pictured with a a more natural look (left) and full face of make-up (right)
Participants in the study believed that other individuals find greater amounts of makeup attractive, and he said that women in particular think a full-face or perfectly applied make-up is attractive to men.
In fact, both sexes thought that other men would find greater amounts of make-up more attractive.
However, he said it ‘couldn’t be further from the truth’ and when reporting their preference for make-up, men found women’s faces more attractive when they were much fresher faced.
In some cases, they found women more attractive with 40 per cent less make-up.
The study also claims women shared similar ideas and thought females looked better as more natural beauties.

The first scientific study to examine the close-up was conducted in 2012 and researchers found they can make people less attractive, regardless of how good looking they are.
According to the study from California Institute of Technology (Caltech), the distance between the subject and the camera makes a big difference in how someone is perceived.
'It turns out that faces photographed quite close-up are geometrically warped, compared to photos taken at a larger distance,' said Ronnie Bryan, who worked on the study.
'Of course, the close picture would also normally be larger, higher resolution and have different lighting - but we controlled for all of that in our study.
'What you're left with is a warping effect that is so subtle that nobody in our study actually noticed it.
'Nonetheless, it's a perceptual clue that influenced their judgments.'
Researchers also found close-up photos made people look less trustworthy, according to study participants.
The close-up photo subjects were also judged to look less attractive and competent.
‘The take home message from this study is that our ideas about what the opposite sex find attractive are often inaccurate, whether it relates to body size, weight, or even something like make-up use,' continued Dr Jones.
‘The misconceptions play a role in body image and self esteem issues and are sadly based on simple misunderstandings.
‘I hope everyone takes the positive response to their no makeup selfies on board, and well done for raising awareness and money for a good cause!’
The #NoMakeUpSelfie trend shows no sign of dying down.
Earlier this week, Kath Abrahams, director of engagement and income generation at Breakthrough Breast Cancer, said: 'We are delighted to see the success of the no make-up selfie viral campaign.
'It is great to see the British public getting behind the campaign and helping to raise awareness of breast cancer.
'Here at Breakthrough, we have seen a huge spike in the number of unique visitors to our website, smashing our record to date. We have received hundreds of donations from people.
'We would like to thank all those who have supported us, enabling our scientists to continue their life-saving research.
'Breast cancer is not yesterday’s problem; every ten minutes a woman is diagnosed with breast cancer. Anything that gets the public behind this important cause is to be celebrated. It isn’t too late to get involved, so go ahead and text PINK to 70300.'
